View Full Version : EXD Server Down

Sorry kids. Here is the rundown.
Here's the problem:
The file system on the host server has become corrupt. Our only option is to restore from backup. We've setup a new host server and have begun restoring all clients on this server from the most recent backup. Unfortunately this is our only option at this point. We apologize for the inconveniences and appreciate you patience.
Then they were able to get it back up momentarily this afternoon and the backup they had was from around the 24th of May. I turned off the forums and emailed them back and forth again a couple times. They say they have a back up from within the last 24 hours so we might loose a couple posts, as long as it isn't 20 days we'll be ok.
We are still in the process of restoring the newer backups. Please do not make any changes to the server at all though, as it will cause the manual restore to fail.
So hopefully they will have the correct backup finalized sometime tonight. They work 24/7, so I'm sure they'll have it fixed soon. I won't be around for the next couple hours. We'll see.
EDIT - BACK UP.

O.o not running a raid five?!? whats wrong with them. :P Tho seriously, that would have kept everything up to date without need to resort to backing up periodically.

I don't know what raid five is, but they are a very good hosting company and always resolve their problems quickly and even help when I am the one creating the problems. They do backups every 24-48 hours for all of their clients.
According to Munky, it was down around 3AM and it was back up around 8PM. So, between those 17 hours (13 hours really since I didn't know there was a problem until this morning) I talked to them via email about 10 times, each time getting a response within 15 minutes. I love those guys.

Raid 5 is a self replicating hard drive setup usually using 4 or more drives where if one goes down/corrupted, you remove the bad drive, slip in new one and is auto restored. Since the drives are are backed up onto each other. Think one big drive with multiple backups constantly done as data is loaded.

raid 5 won't do anything for corrupted files, it just prevents failures due to hardware, if the software corrupts the file the raid 5 will just replicate the corrupted file...

I was thinkin about that actually. Realized bad file is just data to the setup. :(

eh it happens .. .;-) IMO they should have a exact clone of their setup and be able to do a straight server image on failure.. but no one is perfect.. and you know what.. if their support is that good... even if they have problems... stick with them... good support is hard to find

I use bluehost for work-related web hosting of the city's web pages. Never had an unscheduled outage (was down less than an hour, overnight, once while they changed out a bunch of servers). IMO, in today's world of RAID arrays and backup servers, any downtime in unacceptible.

Not saying the downtime is unacceptilbe on your part, but that in today's competitive market of web hosting, downtime should be less than you've had to deal with.

Depends on the services performed, server load, and the cost of hosting. To get uber-reliable hosting with php and mySQL support isn't cheap.
Some of the problems the site may be encountering could be due to the fact that the site is on a shared server (I'm assuming it is). You can get lucky or unlucky with shared web hosting services when there are dynamic websites to consider. A lot can depend on the other sites running on the server. And obviously a managed dedicated server will be much, much more expensive. The company I work for priced that out recently.

They are giving me 50% off for the month because of the 17 hour downtime.
I love our host.

With 50% off I probably still pay too much according to some people. Oh wells. Can't beat good service.
