Can you? I think the mounting holes are different; there are two pair on the top DIN space and one on the bottom.

you just might have to get creative.
why are you moving it though?
the hu will be harder to reach any lower.. at least imo

You might have to cut a metal brace within the dash. I remember reading posts about putting double-DIN radios in the dash, and people had to cut the brace because the space behind the storage pocket wasn't deep enough with the brace in there.

The metal brace is removable. It's a ***** to do (not a lot of hand-space), but there's only a couple screws/bolts holding it in place. Remove it, and reinstall it lower.

I have my headunit on the bottom, because I installed Tib multigauges on top.

You don't have to cut it; you can take it out; it's held in with Philips head screws. Those screws are probably tighter than any other bolt in the car though, for some reason. Forget using a normal screwdriver; put a Philips head bit in a !/4 hex socket, and use a ratchet handle. That's the only way to get enough torque to get those screws loose.

[EDIT: or what hyunelan2 said :D]

There should be a thread somewhere (maybe in the non-working archives) that specifies the wiring. I know there were a couple differences between the GLS and GT for wiring.

I still fail to see how to make them bolt up in opposite locations since the holes are different, i.e. 4 on top, 2 on the bottom.

Who has a clever way to pull that off? I'm interested in the swap, because the stereo is always on, I don't adjust volume, and I reach for my cigarettes in the pocket more often than the volume knob, so I'd like to switch them.

I would just try it. I looks like there are guide pins on the top and bottom that may light up with the screw holes. You may have to drill them out a bit to make them fit in opposite locations, but it might work.

If you're that worried about it, get some parts out of a junked Elantra and mess those up instead. (Actually, I might even have some extra parts laying around.)

I don't remember having any issue with the number of screws for mounting. Worst-case scenario, 2 screws will do an adequate job of holding the headunit in place, rather than 4. I seem to remember still having 4 in place with my HU on the bottom though. Take it apart and see what happens. Phillips screw driver and maybe 1/2 an hour is all it should take.

theres no way they will line up just trying to swap places. you have to do the insert swap which i would love to see done. i dont wanna pull apart my freshly painted dash for no reason

Now that you mention it, I think I have the 'adapter plates' that came with the tib-multigauge to help make things line up. You might have to switch Left and Right for it to work... again, this was a long time ago I did this.

For those without the tib multigauge, IIRC, the pocket is slightly larger to mount than the headunit. Put the headunit on the bottom and put the screw through the top hole of the mounting plate. Then, use whichever mounting position fits best for the pocket.

i broke one of my platic holder side pieces when i put in my HU, youd never be able to tell. its held in with one screw right now and its fine.

My hu is just held in with that steel insert plate you get with hu's, i didnt use any screws at all. i just slid the insert plate into place and then bent the small steel tabs from the plate down to hold the hu "holder" in place. then the hu just slid into it and "clicked" into place. Of course its a bit diff from the norm becasue sony uses a special tool to release the "click" so that you dont need to use screws..

i too remember the inside of the chamber well, i remember looking at it and thinking it wouldnt be hard to switch that holder from bottom to top, i was also thinkin i bet i could get it to work by just removing the whole thing and flipping it upside down also. i never tried so i duno abou the screws.. but there were only a few screws holding things in place im sure it wouldnt be hard to re-drill some things either..

damn someone needs a pic of this casue now its got me thinking about it and i just dont have a clear pic..

i just had to move the brace, and i made up a mount bracet for the bottom one, just bent abit of metal screw it to the headunit and then just screw it in to the dash.
