 hey guys/girls i was wondering if it is easy to just add a tip to the 04 exauhst... i tokk a look at the cat back and the big box thing(what is it) and the pipe that goes from the box towards the engine and it goes up and over the suspension stuff... how do you get rid of that box and trade it with a muffler tip? i want to go for looks and sounds first... or would it be easier to just save up some more money and buy a catback that conects to the tip?

heres some pics of my car.... http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=49940318&albumId=622214

Pics not working. Please post on Photobucket or some site besides Myspace, please!

Tips are easy to add. Bolt it on, maybe cut a notch out of the bumper if you need to. Search around, tons of info about this.

the pics "work", you'd just have to be his friend to see them. so yes, use photobucket.

and save money and get a true exhaust. you'll regret it later if you don't.

ok thats a good idea... thx guys... do you think it would work just as well to use a hood scoop over a SRI as using a CAI? i lifted my hood after i got done driving and it was really hot in there so i want to add some vents and a hood scoop to cool things down

hood scoop would be hard seeing as there aren't ones made "for" elantras (as far as I know). you'd have to get a generic one and do lots of body work to get it to look nice. plus keeping rain out would be difficult if you didn't do it right. have you already done this? (asking because your sig says "SRI with hood scoop")

for the money you'd spend on that, you could get an ebay cold air intake for a 97 accord .... K&N air filter... less than $100 later you'd have a custom cold air intake, which would probably work better.

look in the DIY section for how to do an accord CAI in an elantra. or ask for advice (I've done it myself, it's pretty easy if you're technically inclined.) sure everyone else has it, but it works.

but hey, it's your car. do what you want! don't let my opinion stop you. maybe you'll do a great job and have a truly unique elantra.

ya hopefully... i've looked at some diy's and its acctually really easy... its the molding it down thats the heard part... i think ill just skip that part and leave a lip around it... it should look good... about keeping water out you got me... what is that pipe that comes out of the box going towards the catback... just that short bent piece

edit: it will cost me like 10 bucks for the scoop so its a lot cheaper then the accord CAI... all i have to buy is a filter and a scoop and maybe some backup grinders to help cut out the hood

are you talking about the tube coming out of your intake manifold going into the intake pipe?

keeping water out will just mean you'll have to place the scoop in a slightly-angled-down spot so that water naturally flows away from dripping into the engine bay. put some mesh on the opening and it'll keep most huge water amounts from getting on/in your filter.

use a K&N filter. those APC things from autozone are junk.

so long as you don't drive fast in a hurricane, water shouldn't be too much of an issue.

thanks for the tips on the scoop... im sorry i was talking about the exhaust about the box in the back where the tail pipe comes out... on the other side of that box there's that pipe going up and over the suspension stuff before it conects with the cat back... what is that piece called?

he's saying basically only a new muffler, no exhaust manifold or cat mods.

yes people have done this. you won't get the best results possible, but it'll still be an alternative to replacing the entire exhaust system... and you can always replace the rest later on.

ya... exactly... do any of you have pix or anything of it? im gonna need some extra piping cause the mufflers are all too short they have like a five inch gap between the ind of the muffler and the pipe...

saturn

so buy some extra pipe?

get a muffler, go to a muffler shop (midas, etc) and tell them to put it on. they'll charge you for everything and you'll have a new muffler.

aight thats a good idea... do you have a estimate of how much it will cost them to put it on?

I've seen an heard about 100 for installation (not counting muffler) Good muffler choices are Borla ProXS (which i got off ebay for 90) and Dynomax Super Turbo.
Join Eclub and take a look thru this thread http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16161
Couple of sounds clips of the Borla (one on a full system the other on stock system)

hey are the pipes 2"

BColeman

No, the pipes are 1 7/8".

My recommendation is you take it to a shop and have them bend new, 2" pipe to connect at the flange right above the subframe in the rear on the exhaust pipe. Then connect it to your new muffler. Should cost no more than $100, and if it does, you might want to go some where else. We are only talking about a half hour of work and a little bit of pipe.

Also, you were asking what was between the catalytic converter and the bends going over the suspension. That is the Resonator, it quites the exhaust down, and it restricts the flow. It's your choice whether you want to remove it and replace with a piece of pipe, or just leave it alone.

aight thats cool... i think that i should just do it myself if one of my friends will let me use there welder its really easy

has anyone tried doing two sets of headers two sets of 2-1 and then have dual exhaust im gonna try this this coming school year and make my own headers and cat backs....
