I stopped in the muffler shop down the street from work yesterday. I was asking the guy about prices and whatnot. He said that if I buy my own muffler he would charge me $100 to go from the cat back with 2.25" pipe. Now I am sure this would be crush bent and my first question is should I just get 2.5" pipe to make up for the crush bends?
will this void my warranty from hyundai? also if anybody is familiar with Illinois EPA bullshat will they give me much guff?

No, it won't void the warranty. And no, stick with the 2.25" pipe. No idea to for the last question.

it would only void your warranty if the bends were causing exessive back pressure. but you should be fine

the 2.25 will work very well, its what I have on mine. I was half tempted to go with 2.5, but its overkill unless you are turbo or SC.

If you dont touch the cat or the o2 sensors I dont see how it would be a problem legally.

+1
If anything, it would void the warranty on the muffler... but you have a good one on the shelf when you take off the original.

there will be absolutely no problem with a cat back...if all emissions is kept in their original spots the warranty will still be valid...

Also, one other thing. Crush bent pipe, these days anyway, is really only found at the manufacturing plant.
As a matter of fact, the Elantra's exhaust pipe isn't even crush bent. They call it Smooth Bending, and that's what most muffler shops have these days, smooth bending machines. It's in between the wrinkled, crush bending of past days and the uber awesome mandrel bending.
Just an FYI...
