so for the last 2-3 weeks, ive been planning on switching back to progressive from allstate. did the online quote, came out to me going from 215ish/mo w/ allstate, to about 163/mo w/ progressive. sweet. so i call allstate about noon today to have the policy cancelled as of midnight tonight (night of 21, morn of 22))

so i go to purchase the progressive, and when i go to check out, they say that a wreck i had in dec 05 (during the ice storm, no ticket, no insurance claim...i paid for repairs out of pocket...just filed an accident report incase i wanted to file a claim if the repairs cost too much) is being counted as an accident against me...funny since they didnt count it as an accident against me when i started with them in october. so they jack my rate up to 210/mo. call in to find out WTF is going on, basically get no where. i tell them im not going to switch for a 5$/month savings

call up allstate about 1130, see if i can cancel the cancellation and just continue my coverage. no go. theyre telling me its already processed and cant be stopped. so i tell them i need to speak to someone to see about starting a new policy. im a little mad because im gonna lose the 3 months into the policy i have, that after 6 months will drop my premium 5%, but its my fault, nothing i can do

so i talk to the sales rep, she goes thru the whole application thing again, finally gets done around midnight. she then tells me the 6 month premium is just a few bucks cheaper than before (good), but a couple things are going on. #1, shes saying i owe them 45$ for the days i used...my policy runs from the 21st to the 20th. being that its cancelled as of the 22nd, i can see owing 1 day, maybe 2. at 215/mo, 30 days/mo, thats about 7$/day. how they came up with 45$, i dont know. so past that, she tells me my down payment would be 405$, and that the monthly would be like 170.

this would be fine if i could do a 405$ payment, plus my 25$ renters insurance. but shes saying that something at the company changed for ohio and something about only being able to have 1 incident per car to get into the line of insurance where i can have the good drivers discount, lower down payment, etc etc. so i tell her theres no way i can do 430$ right now, and ask her if she can talk to a supervisor and see if we can work something out, because i'd like to stick with allstate. she comes back a minute later - no.

so now, i have to go BACK to progressive, and sign up with these assholes.

insurance can suck my balls. ive been doing as much as i can to keep my driving record clean, in the last 3 years, all ive had is the 1 accident i paid for repairs myself, and i still have to pay over 200$/mo for insurance

edit : called up to inquire on the 45$ bill...apparently it has something to do with when i switched vehicles, and my insurance went up 300$/6 months. i just got sick of trying to understand her explanation, i asked her "when is it due", and she says "well, we'll send you 3 letters then it goes to a collection agency". i proceed to tell her i work at one, and im not gonna let it go that far, so i said **** it and put it on my credit card

The online quotes are never accurate and should not be used even loosely as a guide to what your true rates will be. Same with every other company that offers online quotes. Never make a change in companies based on an online quote ... base your decision on a true quote given by a live representative. Keep in mind that each quote you get from an insurance company will also show inquiries on your credit report and will thus lower your credit score as well. Find a good insurance company and STAY with them, you will see the benefits down the road. I've been with Farmer's Insurance for about 15 years now and I pay $1,085/year for auto, home, and life insurance ... all substantial policies.

I got mine through Horace Mann Insurance Co. Nobody can touch my rate. Progressive online says $1500 for 6 months, for one car. Horace Mann is $500 for 6 months for 2 vehicles. Everytime I hear people complain about costs that high, I just laugh.

when i switched to geiko they claimed I had 3 accidents on my "record"

all were not my fault because I was rear ended all 3.

I actually forced geiko to have a conference call with my previous insurance, new jersey manufactures, and THEY told geiko the accidents were not my fault so geiko removed them from the policy, lowering my rates.

Fight it, man.

I gasp at what I see you guys paying for insurance, seriously.

I hadn`t had anything insured for 20 years, then bought a new accent, it was 100 a month. Then I did a U turn in front of a chick in an older accent, totalled both cars, would have been 20K easy cost to the Insurance Co, I bought an Elantra, my premium started at about 75 bucks a month, it`s under 60 now, and less again after xmas and 3 years ownership.

I suppose, bigger population, crime rates and all factor into it, but crikey it seems hella steep...

i tried to fight it. they basically compared it to hitting a deer. they said they still count it as an accident.

as for the credit reporting, i actually had a trial offer to freecreditreport.com that i was checking rates while i had it...when the dealership was trying to get financing, i got daily emails saying there were inquiries, but the insurance companies never looked

plus, my score never went down a single point with all those inquiries

Are there only 2 insurance companies you can use? I'd say F them both and go with someone else completely.

I think the moral of the story is to lock up the new policy before canceling the old one.

At least you did the right thing and got new insurance right away.

I paid a bunch of money by switching to GEICO ! ! !

Give them a shot though, even though my insurance went up by switching to them, my rate isn't that bad for 2 cars, and my wife on the policy too. And she's only 24, so she's expensive compared to me. I pay $243 a month, but that's full coverage on both vehicles, $500 ded., and 2 drivers. I have 1 ticket and 1 accident on my record too.

I'm with state farm. $200/mo for full-coverage auto ($500 deduct.) and renters insurance.

lots of places will give you discounts. for example, there is a "single father" discount at state farm.

monthy estimates for full coverage for me:
geico 180
allstate 140
esurance 120
state farm 110

those arent exact or nothing, but thats about how it was when i called all the places about 5 months ago. needless to say, im with state farm and i would NOT have saved money by switching to geico!

i did one more too.. maybe progressive.. but it was over 200! so i was like screw that..

course those are all e-quotes except for allstate and state farm which i called both of them

also pa has some real small companies i hear of people getting amazing rates from.. i just dont know how well they pay out should you need it..

I pay like 120 a month (~1400 a year) for full coverage and I'm only 18.

EDIT: My provider is Erie Insurance

those are about the 2 cheapest i could find. nationwide wants over 3k/6 months, and state farm wanted like 1600/6 months. geico was something stupid too

I'm 22, single, have a car with "GT" in the title, and have 2 accidents and a speeding ticket.

geico wanted $500+ per month from me, and a $4000 down payment (wtf!)

kind of like when I originally tried to sign up with cingular: $50/mo and a $500 down payment (for a cell phone?)

^^^Sounds like you need to improve your credit?

saturn
06-22-2007, 01:04 PM
nope
I've never bought anything and I don't owe money to anyone (I don't have "bad" credit, just NO credit history, so it's almost worse!)

edit: one exception to "never" = the elantra. but I'm paying it off with the dealer directly.

Yeah, not having credit means you need to improve your credit. There are a few threads around hear about that, if you haven't read them. Easiest way to start is to get a low-limit credit card and start putting your gas on it. Pay it off monthly. You're not going to get super-great credit just doing that, but it's a start.

well yeah basically

I have a $500 credit card
used it to buy gas/food while on vacation (about $300 worth), paying it all off asap.

I'd call a local insurance broker if I were you. There are plenty out there. They'll shop around for you to find the lowest prices, usually picking from a select few of preferred insurance carriers. And they get paid off of commission so it's not like it costs you any extra to use them.

I ended up switching from State Farm (on the Elantra) to Safeco (on the STI). And get this, even though the coverage was the same it was actually a little cheaper to insure the STI with Safeco than it was to insure the Elantra with State Farm.

Anyway, I know that Safeco and Traveller's typically have very good prices but it's going to vary so talking to a broker is your best bet.

The Elantra is an uber-expensive car to insure, but I wouldn't think it would be as much as an STI.

It costs me more to insure the '02 Elantra than it does my '04 Santa Fe, which is worth about twice as much.

I go through State Farm and have had no problems. Every year or so I call around to see if I can get a cheaper rate and I can never find anything cheaper than what I've got. I have car, rental, and life insurance through them and it's 80/month. I have a few speeding tickets (pre-radar detector) but they either don't know about them or my insurance could be cheaper than I thought. Before I went with them though I was going through AllState, paying almost 300/month. I say, eff AllState. :)

I am 28, I have a careless driving (BS) and 2 speeding tickets, full coverage on my 05 GT - $76mo. AIG. I have tried all the different companys over the years, and yes it made a difference when I turned 25, but AIG was 40% cheaper than the cheapest I ever found, been with them for 2.5 years now.

I pay about $107 per month for my Ela GT.

I use State Farm, and I have a $500.00 deductible, $250 comprehensive.

I do also have my home insured through them, but even before I did that...it was around $115 per month.

And that is in the Metro Detroit area...one of the most inflated insurance markets in the country.

I'd do some more shopping

Peace
