I'd suggest having it made at a graphics place that does custom license plates.

^ True, I never thought about that. An opportunity for actual plates is a real great idea.

Dave had some at one point. He might be able to help.

sorry if this is a dumb question, but who is Dave?

thought about printing one - my friend does vinyl... but it'd be flat... and south korea's plates are embossed.

EDIT: I take that back. searched some more and found these photos:

Ah crap what was it. Go to google and type in korean license plates and you'll find some site that will custom make them for you.

Cornbread linked it, im sure if you search you'll find the site.

You may have to ask for custom work because i don't see the plates section on the site anymore. Just use that pic as reference, and you can choose between a plastic and metal plate, but i think the metal plate only came in black.

yeah in 2006 they switched over starting with government vehicles

but I want a 2003 style plate since that's what year my car is.

I'm going to see if a friend of mine can do it, either on plastic or aluminum, with scotchlite (reflective!) vinyl.

quick question... is it illegle to have EU plates in the front? in AZ? i saw someone in town that had em and it looked kinda cool...

In AZ do you need a front plate? If you do, then switching it to a different plate that isn't the regular plate is going to be illegal. If you don't need a front plate, then no, I doubt you'd get any hassle.

I never saw the point in this...but i'm not knockin it. Just don't get it. If you want a korean plate that bad...move there:D

point is it looks cool... like the EU plates on VWs. makes your car look like it's where it belongs.

http://europeanplates.com/european%20license%20plates%20big.jpg

front plates: most states its illegal to have a fake plate in front unless its a confederate flag or some other decoration (non-imitation plate)

if your state requires a front plate, it's also illegal to have anything but your regular plate in front (including the lack of a plate)

however!

this isn't always enforced. ohio is a good example of enforcement being pretty low. most cops thinks it looks cool. this is like most things where they'll only enforce it if they're looking for a reason to pull you over.

I would only use it at a show for decoration.

no enforcement in columbus isn't the same as in cleveland. I got pulled over and the officer walked around my car and said he stopped me for no front plate and i told him it wasn't there because i was in an accident then he gave me a warning.

if i do get a plate should i get a korean one sence our cars are from korea

evan938

depends where in columbus you are. in gahanna, that guy on CR got busted coming out of wendy's in his VIPER for no front plate. never had a speeding ticket in his life. worthington is also really strict about front plates.

i havent had issues yet, but im gonna put it in my dash, and take the screws out of the front bumper sean put back in there after removing the dealer tag...that way if i get pulled over i can just say i havent gotten the screws yet. if he pulls me over with the screws stuck in the bumper, i think ill be pretty much SOL

saturn

yeah, some places will look for a reason AFTER pulling you over. a viper is going to get pulled over for going 2 miles under the speed limit if a cop can get away with it.

you could always do this: mount the plate below your legal plate? or keep the legal plate jammed between the dash and the window.

having a friend make them. they'll be 12in x 6in, scotchlite (reflective) vinyl green and white on aluminum.

not exactly like korean plates, but will mount on american cars and be the same size as american plates... look like the 2000-2006 license plates (same year as XD/XD2 elantras!)

each one will be hand made (custom lettering of your choice)

the more people who want them, the cheaper it'll cost to make them, but initially it's looking like $25 to $30 each w/ shipping.

UPDATE:

using a different font so it's easier to read and can fit another character... keep in mind it'll be rounded off like a real license plate.

i can't remember what the numbers on the top meant exactly but i think it denotes what area of korea. like what i have "54" is supposed to be used in Seoul

saturn
07-02-2007, 10:02 PM
someone told me it's the class of car... I used 54 because that's what's on tiburons I've seen with korean plates...

but these are custom. you can choose whatever. if you want different korean writing I can do that too.

update: found out the characters on top are location (state/city/district#) and character(s) on left of plate# are the vehicle type (private, taxi, rental, etc).

UPDATE: I have the blank plates made up. they are about twice as thick as a normal license plate but should still work with accessories (frames, covers, etc). the green scotchlite coating is painted on rather than a sticker (easier to do than stickers).

I'll have pictures tonight of the blank, but I'd like to get a pre-buy going to I know what everyone wants (it'll be cheaper for me AND you to have all of the lettering printed at one time).

so, anyone interested?

sounds cool, just to add PA isnt too bad with front plates, ive seen it quite a bit cause we allow front vanity plates here.. usually pa is crap about anything, but this is one you can get away with.. most of the time anyway :P

The top-right two digits "implicitly" denotes where it was registered (within a province). But not explicitly because it changes over time and not very consistent. The top-left two characters denotes where(which province/city) it was registered. It says Ulsan (where hyundai has its factories) For example, Seoul42 means river-southern area of Seoul Seoul33 means blahblah..

However, the font used for Korean characters is EXTREMELY strange. (Not just ugly.)

ps. the top two digits include car-type information, too. However, you don't need to worry about that. Both xd and tib are (usually) "private car".

saturn

yeah I'm going to look for a different font. lots of people have told me the curves are too stylized and look funny.

babot, can you read korean? you might be able to help me make a list of what's available. I have the fonts and understand how to form the characters but I don't know what they actually mean.

05xd: I'm making the plates in this style because it's what WAS used until they changed in 2006 and most of our cars are pre-2006 so it would be model year appropriate. also, because the green plates are the same size as US and Canadian plates, and will work well with current accessories (like frames and covers) and will mount up to our cars without any modification.

depending on how many people confirm that they want a plate, I'll have a final price... and multiples will get a small discount... probably about $25 for one and $40 for two. I need around 20 to 25 people before I can even make anything (the guy doing the vinyl won't do it if he's only going to do like 5 or 10).

I'll have a photo tonight of the blank plate. it's hand made by me, and very high quality.

Sure, I can read Korean... much more fluently than English. :)

If you have the fonts installed in your system, let the computer form the characters. I guess you did it yourself manually, but it isn't a good idea.

For example, you can do that on mspaint if you installed Korean fonts and input (I can make you pictures like the example if you don't want to do that.)
http://kohaku.babot.net/public/example.PNG
Awwww I don't have some decent Korean fonts installed in my work computer... :( My home computer should have fonts very similar to that of actual license plates.

ps. I like the font used for the tib's license plate (90's style). There are several 'new' license plate formats after (probably) 2003, which replaced the old format that existed about a couple of decades. But, the 'new' formats had too much complaints (people said that they are TOO UGLY). And the government changed the format again and again (because the format faced same complaints, again). Now, it seems that people are satisfied with the most recent one(or being tired complaining...), which looks like EU's license plates. However, US government tried to sue Korean government saying "this new license plate format is a blockade against US auto exports to Korea because US cars are not designed for such license plate format."

I have a plate cut out at home that I can take some pics of. having trouble drilling holes in it to mount for pics because my drillbits are sh*tty wood and mason bits. gotta run to the hardware store tonight and get a proper bit!

and like I've said, the guy doing the vinyl went on vacation so I have to wait to hear back from him.

did this one by hand... so the spacing was off and I didn't have room for all of the symbols - but that's OK, it's just sort of a proof of concept. and it does look nice.

sorry about the crazy flash. I have it under a black tinted cover and it's hard to see without flash... the green isn't that crazy - it's actually almost identical to the real korean plates. I'll take a better picture tomorrow.
