So I go to Pep Boys this morning and ask for a pair of rear brake pads, an Air conditioner belt and an alternator belt.

I get home and tear down the passenger side rear brake assembly because the pad is almost gone. I get the whole thing pulled apart and the screw in piston retracted. I then open the box of "rear" pads that "Bob" at the Pep Boys parts counter got for me, and guess what. They're the FRONT brake pads!

I can't believe those idiots. Why do you bother telling them if you want front or rear pads if they just arbitrarily grab you a set?

So now, I had to put the old pads back on and reassemble everything. So I'm still running on the almost worn out pads after all of that work!!! F$%&%$.

That's crap man. You need to talk them into a discount or something for poor customer service and stupidity. BTW, don't shop at Pep Boys if you can help them. I boycott them every chance I get. Their service department is a rip off, their service technicians don't know jack. The only thing I'd get done there is tires, maybe, if hell froze over.

They've done okay for me, including a set of tires my wife wore out by not rotating them (replaced under warranty), they've done a couple timing belts for me, no problem, and my son recently took his Cutlass into them for front end work. They quoted him $700 for the work when he got a couple new tires put on. He took it back two weeks later to get the work done. They said they misquoted him the first time and to expect a bill of $900. At least they told him up front before starting the work. Then when they got in there and did the work, the bill came to only $550.

Any auto parts store is going to have a significant proportion of their workforce who is just learning the business and will make a mistake once in a while. I don't think Pep Boys is any worse than other stores in that regard.

This is the same Pep Boys who removed a fog light from my wife's '96 Impreza a few years ago during inspection. They claimed that the lens was cracked, which it might have been, and wanted $120 to replace it. When I went in to see it, the lens was broken all the way out of the housing and it was in two pieces. I know it wasn't that way on the car. THEY ALSO LOST THE BRACKET.

I would have appreciated seeing the part on the car with the crack in it. They didn't have any pictures of it cracked on the car, and I don't remember the lens being cracked. If there's a problem with a part on a customer's car, you leave it on the car until you tell them and give them an option to come in and see it in place before you do any more work. Anyway...

So I took the car home, removed the other fog light and brought it back for the sticker. Later, I went and got a pair of $30 DOT / SAE approved fog lights, put them on. Problem solved.

The gist of this is that the Pep Boys on McKnight road in Pittsburgh is staffed with (and therefore managed by) idiots.

i had a buddy who took his van into a pepboys for new tires and brakes and they droped his van off the lift..

not just droped it on the tires but it fell sidways off the lift......NEVER WENT BACK TO THERE AND NEVER WILL AGAIN...

and a second bad time at pep boys was when i went in to buy my drill and flashlight set.. the sales paper i got in the sunday newspaper said they had it onsale for 19.99 when i went to the store they said they didnt have that sale anymore and that it had ended the week before. so i just paid the 35.00 they were asking(i really needed a drill) and when i got home and looked at the paper it said that the sale was still good for another week..

so i called and talked to the manager, told him what was going on and he told me it was a new lady at the counter. he said to bring in the sales paper and the drill with my recept and he will refund the diffrence. so when i went up there he said he couldnt refund the money and he wouldnt give me a refund!!!! BULL****!!!!!!

If that happened recently, contact Pep Boys corporate. I bet they would take care of it.

i took my brothers old camry to pep boys because the oil drain plug was stripped by either them or jiffy lube. i figured they could retap the threads and put an oversized plug in. but the guy comes back to me and says that he cant do it and i need a new oil pan for 600 dollars. needless to say i laughed and said no thanks. a couple days later i went to a nearby gas station and told the shop guy the situation. he retapped it and gave me an oil change for $32.95 total. lesson learned!

I went to get brake pads for a friend's Civic, and they have ones for $12.99, $20, and $50 (good, better, ceramic). I'm wondering what was in the ones for $12.99. How can a brake pad be so cheap? I'm betting horsehair.

And I had to talk to the manager to get somebody back at the service counter. Thankfully we do not need the pads.

I never realized that there were so many pittsburgh guys on this board.
first off, never go to that pep boys...or any, but never that one. I used to know a guy that managed it. He told friends like me not to come there. They get coached to rip you off. never buy parts from a store that installs them. If you cant get them to fit, then maybe you are dumb and will come and have them installed...LOL get the picture.

on that note, I once bought an alternator for my f150 along with a battery to get me home on and it turned out to be a used altornator that was a kore return. I got a the battery for free out of the deal because the guy felt so dumb.
That is a real parts store.
it was advanced down on 65 that hooked me up.

Do you mean that Advance Auto screwed you up initially and then straightened it out? Or do you mean that another shop screwed you up, then Advance on route 65 fixed the problem?

I never realized that there were so many pittsburgh guys on this board....

What part of Pittsburgh do you live? If you go to the Advance Auto on 65, you're in my neck of the woods. Wanna go up to either Stoystown Auto Wreckers or to Wagner and son's auto sometime to scrounge parts?

Pep boys has never been anything but overpriced to me.

Although I've never had to suffer much of their "service" thankfully.

Pepboys sucks. They can't get their rebates straight. My whole family does a lot or rebates and their processing department just can't get it right so we all decided never to shop there again.
