I just got new pipe from the resonator back to the new muffler on my car for 120 and that includes the muffler. Got it done at Monro Muffler they did a pretty good job.

06-25-2007, 04:11 PM
hey to cut the stock muffler off should i use the dremmel?

saturn
06-25-2007, 04:17 PM
or a hacksaw

and please wear eye/face/mouth/hair/throat/crotch protection

Yozick
06-25-2007, 04:20 PM
Does the Elantra have the turn there with a bolt on connection? If so undo it to have it out from under the car and do your work on a bench. I would use a hacksaw or an angle grinder if you have either of those available to cut the pipe.

edit: looked at the pic and yes it is bolted there. and YES use protection!! Did you already try to unbolt it? Just asking cause it looks like it has been sprayed with some stuff.

if i do the work myself i could just pay like $40 for the muffler and pipes...what is a good outlet size? 3.5" 4"?

Ugzz
06-25-2007, 04:44 PM
i just had some stuff quoted from a mechanic and he told me if i wanted to have it profesionaly installed (a mufler that is) that i might as well pay the 300$ for a direct bolt on and do it myself casue i wouldnt save anything buying a cheap sub 100$ one then paying for installation.. :P

so ill stay stock for a bit longer.. (im also still under warranty anyway :P)

what does the borla muffler do?

besides rape your wallet in some cases, it sounds really good and will be a good investment.

do NOT buy a fart can. there's a reason they're only $17.

red36
06-26-2007, 04:16 PM
ya i figured that... i want a muffler tip that doesnt look stock though... im sure i can find something thats bigger or looks non stock

PSUsouthpaw
06-26-2007, 11:09 PM
Any nice muffler tip will look non stock, seeing as the stock tip is completely hidden.

Seriously, wideass fartcans are just scary looking

(p.s. I wanted to say widemouth, but that doesn't quite apply to mufflers very well)

Silentwolf
06-26-2007, 11:23 PM
Go to your local Auto store they have many styles to choose from as long as its silver/chrome. :D
I'm looking for black chrome for mine so im still on the hunt.

BColeman
06-26-2007, 11:31 PM
I've owned 3 eBay mufflers over the last 2 years. That alone should tell you not to buy one, or at least prepare you to replace it in 9 months or so.

You can go to Advance or AutoZone and pick up a 3A Racing fart can for $69.99, and it's a good muffler, will last a while. It's on struck1481's ride now (was on mine) and it sounds good too, but he's boosted. And it lasts, which is nice. He never washes his car though, so the muffler isn't that shiny right now, but the finish on them last too.

And UGZZ, an exhaust system can't and won't void your warranty. Just thought I'd let you know that.

thanks guys... i really appreciate it... and im not being sacastic... i think im gonna go with the Borla and a autozone muffler tip... its gonna look like this its what my mom wants.... would the borla muffler and tip make any performance upgrades?

Silentwolf
06-27-2007, 12:56 AM
Have to frown at dual tips on our small cars but ur choise. As for performance, certainly a weight reduction and some better exhaust flow as well. so lose 7lbs or so and gain 2-3hp, and certainly more grunt noise.

BColeman
06-27-2007, 10:33 PM
You may want to email that seller though. I don't see in the listing where they might say the offsets for the inlet/outlet.

You do not want offsets. You want Center Inlet, Center Outlet. You better check and make sure.

red36
06-27-2007, 10:36 PM
why do i want that?

BColeman
06-27-2007, 10:42 PM
Because the STOCK exhaust is Center/Center. You will have tons of problems with the offsets. I'll take a pic of my Dynomax Turbo muffler and show you what I mean. I had to twist the muffler so the side of it is pointed down. It's ugly, and fitment is a b i t c h...

You want Center/Center for the welding up, and for it to be in the stock location. Ask anyone here, trust me.

That muffler is nice though, and a very good price. See if there are others from the same store, in the same price, but actually say Center/Center.

Silentwolf
06-27-2007, 11:27 PM
Mine is offset and center. Curious if the the muffler is directional tho since its straight thru. And its 2 1/4 both ends.

BColeman
06-27-2007, 11:30 PM
No, they shouldn't be directional. If you've got a center/offset muffler, then the center can go on the exhaust pipe, while the tip is offset, either right or left.

Silentwolf
06-27-2007, 11:38 PM
Actually that will be perfect then to the left (closer to center of car) thanks. I have plans so :D

red36
06-28-2007, 01:38 AM
i looked at the stock muffler its offset... so i have no idea what you mean? i need pix

BColeman
06-28-2007, 04:33 PM
What do you mean it's offset? None of my stock mufflers, on three different Elantras 02, 04, and 05 have an offset inlet. Sorry dude, you must have bought that car used or something and someone did something to the muffler.

red36
06-28-2007, 04:41 PM
ya its used... ill take some pix to show you its offset

red36
06-28-2007, 04:53 PM
if you notice the inlet is on the left and the outlet is on the right

BColeman
06-28-2007, 08:41 PM
And so you are right. Wow, I wonder what the hell I was thinking. Then you'll be just fine with that Borla muffler with no problem.

You know, since you are buying all this stuff, why don't you pick me up a Borla too. I could use a new muffler:D

Red, do not do the work yourself. From reading this thread, you sound like you wouldn't know what the hell you would be doing (i.e. cutting the stock muffler off with a dremel?). And you want the welding done by a pro welder so they welds don't break later down the line. Plus, your hangers need to be welded on and in the right places. At least get someone experienced to help you if you wanna learn. That's an expensive piece and it would suck to f it up!

red36
06-30-2007, 03:07 AM

Amen. Since I can't say anything to this tard anymore I appreciate your candor.

"Weld up some stuff". . . that's not the exhaust pipe. Different metals melt at different temps, need different rod/wire for different applications and welding stainless steel is another story in itself.

xdforme22
06-30-2007, 07:53 PM
+1. This is something you want to get done right...the first time. There are times when it is good to do things yourself, but there are also times when it its better to plop down the dough and get it done professionally. If you want to learn to weld, great. Just don't learn on your car, it makes for an expensive practice session since you will be messing something up and replacing it. In the end, sometimes its better to let an experienced person do it.

red36

the Scouts metal working merit badge and welding in the real world are TWO DIFFERENT things. I myself have that badge, but I'm going to be taking my stuff to someone who knows how to weld already. **** i have the equipment here IN my garage if i want to do it, but the inclination to have it done right outweighs the need to do it personally.

I don't know a thing about welding, so I'm sorry if I seemed ignorant. If you think you can do it (and want to handle the responsibilities for any consequences) I say go for it. Bottom line is that its your car (or at least will be) and what you do to it is your business. We are more than happy to help out around here and liberally give our opinions. However, the final decision is always in your hands. Best of luck to you and your project!
