Hello all. I need help with installing a new wolo horn. Ive got a 97 elantra automatic. Now let me first start by saying that i did not remove the horn fuse before i took out the old horn and put the new one in.(I still dont know the consequences of that. Please tell me if you do) And i looked at the guides out there but they did not tell me what to do if it didnt work. SO i cut the old wire going to my old horn. I crimped on new spade connectors on the wire( one was blue, one was black. I assume the black is grounded and blue is hot) Then i connected it to the new wolo air horn. Tried using the horn. NOTHING. Now i tried taking out the fuse and putting it back in. Switching where i put the grounded and hot wire in the horn but still nothing. Is it because i did not take out the horn fuse first? IF so do i have to replace the horn fuse before i can get it working or is the new horn dead because i did not remove the horn fuse first? Also i have heard people using relays but im not sure if it applies to electric horns. I think its only for air horns but im not sure. Please any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

No, you shouldn't have to take out the fuse to change the horn, unless you had the car on while you were changing it out. Did you check the fuse to make sure it hadn't busted?
Was there a problem with the old horn? Curious, because if there was a problem with the old horn, then you had a pre-existing problem to begin with. You can try to tie in a switch, temporarily, to make sure the horns you have actually work in the first place.
Your wiring seems correct, Blue=hot, Black=ground. Double check that fuse inside the car to make sure it isn't blown.

Well the horn was working but it was weak. Thats typical with most elantras and hyundais in general i think. It sounded like a duck and nobody really took it seriously. I just wanted a louder horn that can actually alert idiotic new york drivers. Somebody told me that i may have shorted out the fuse because while i cut the wire i touched the ground and hot wire and somebody told me that this would short out the fuse. But now i have no clue how to get this horn fuse. I went to radio shack but the automotive relay they had was too big for the hyundai. If anyone knows where i can get one please give me suggestions. Please realize that the fuse i am talking about is not the one with only two metal connectors that come in 5 and 10 amps. Its the one that looks like a little box and is rated at 12v, 20 amps. Thanks

Gotcha! I just realized how much older your car is. The later Elantra's horns do not work unless the ignition is on. Your's has steady current.
The only place I can suggest getting the new relay fuse is at the dealership.
Check back sometime tomorrow afternoon. There really isn't a whole lot of people on right now. There are several guys that will lead you in the right direction. I cannot remember right now the source we can use for those relays.

what you are describing does not sound like a fuse, but a relay. there should however be a fuse that the horn is connected to. i seem to remember the horn being associated with either the rear window defroster or the interior lights fuses. if it is in fact the relay the best place to get it in a timely fashion would most likely be the dealership. it is no myth that most times the dealership will rape you but from my experience with hyundai they seem pretty reasonable. the only parts i have really found to be expensive are interior type parts. the relay you are looking for should probably be in the neighborhood or 10-15 USD. good luck.

Ya i know it was called a relay but when i looked at some other guides they always said disconnect the horn fuse. I assume they meant the relay in the engine bay. Now if you're saying that there is in fact a fuse that the horn is associated with i wouldnt know about that. If anyone can clarify this for me that would be great. Ill look into the dealership and see how much they rape me for the part. Thanks guys

well i bought the relay from a hyundai dealer.they had one left and th cost of that tiny crap. $27!! Talk about raping you!! I tried putting it in and it still didnt work. I dont know what else could be the problem. maybe the horn itself is broken from when i touched th hot and ground wire and put it on the horn. I guess ill try a new horn to see if thats it or not. Also maybe from what you said earlier that the horn is connected to a fuse? Is there anyway you can be certain which fuse its associated with? Thanks for the help

you can check the horn by connecting either point to the battery and seeing what you get. i would see if you are getting power. get a multimeter or test light and see if there is current through there. sometimes you would be surprised which fuse it is. i know that on my sisters 2000 when i lost the dash lights i also lost only one of the tail lights. i am not exactly sure which fuse it is but there def has to be one, everything on the car has a fuse.
good luck!

on elantras, the horn has it's own fuse in the fuse box under the hood. it's towards the front of the box and I believe is a 15 amp fuse. at work right now so I'm not sure. the lid of the box will tell you what fuse is what.
EDIT: I am dumb and just realized his elantra is older. not sure how these are setup. might be best to ignore my comment!

There is an actual fuse for the horn under the hood. Do it.
