I'm going to be purchasing a JVC KD-HDR1 receiver from Crutchfield to install in my 2001 GLS. It is going to come with this Install Kit: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ZHXQi1nnS8W/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?I=120997308
Will using that part result in a perfect fit for the HU or will it leave an untrimmed gap such as this install?

I'd prefer a more finished look. Opinions please, thanks in advance.

If your car has the factory stereo, remove the front dash fascia and take out the screws that hold the current stereo mounting bracket in place. The same screws that connect the factory stereo to the bracket should also work with your new stereo so you don't have to use any other mounting hardware.

the only reason that install has that gap is because they didnt use the trim ring that came with the headunit..

and i agree i used the peices from the sides of the factory cd player to put in my new one...

Not true; the bezel included with most head units won't fit in the hole in the dash fascia. Check this Guide I wrote for Edmunds CarSpace (http://www.carspace.com/guides/2001-06-Hyundai-Elantra-Audio-Guide?@772.cNl5dZr0yok@) to learn about how to install an aftermarket head unit, including how to trim out that area between the faceplate of the audio unit and the dash fascia.

^ True, you can't use one.

But you can always buy a CD Player that takes up most of the space to prevent an unclean install. That's why I stick with Pioneer, and have for the last 10 years.

my sony trim doesnt fit at all, but it looks just fine without it, you cant even tell unless you really look hard.. i asked the dude at bb when i first got my elatnra and he said they never use them on elantras even if they do fit just because they always look fine without it

 I like the foam tape idea, cheap, easy, fits any size stereo you've got.

The gap is bigger on the 2001 - 2002. You may need thicker foam.

here's what I did when installing my Sony HU.
I went to Michael's (one of those fru-fru picture frame, silk flower and craft places) and got some black foam sheet that was about 1/16" thick. Think of it as poor-mans neoprene.

I cut a strip about 1/2" to 3/4 inch wide to be as long as both sides plus the top of the HU. I folded it double and slid the cut edges into the dash as I was re-installing the large black dash piece. Then you only have a small exposed rounded edge of closed cell black foam showing between the HU and the black dash piece.

It's hard to see from the attached picture, but it should give you some idea...
