View Full Version : Question about HIDS

Really this is to the people who have them. I was looking into getting a set for my car. I already have a pair of cut off shields.

How hard (ie time) is it to install these? I was looking to order a set, because on the 9th, I have to drive down to NC to goto a wedding. I have always had issues with my lights not being bright enough, or not covering enough, at night for my eyes.

I was looking at the DIY, and it doesnt have a lot of details. From my understanding, you place the hid bulbs in, the wire comes out through the caps, and into the ballast? The ballast plugs right into the stock wiring (i.e. no splicing)?

Thanks.

LOL HIDS sounds like a virus.

Another question, do hid's drain more power than regular headlights?

yeah, its really simple

when we did them on my girls 3, we had to remove the front bumper to get the headlight out (because she has that funky clip as well, and i couldnt get it back in), and i still had everything done in under an hour

theres 2 wires that go into sort of liek a "box" ont he stock wiring...when you pull that off the stock bulb, you just plug the 2 HID wires into the plugs where the old bulb plugs would go.

its very straight forward, and i think the directions are even on the box

All you have to do is install the H7 HID bulb into the headlight. Then just drill a hole in the dust cap so that the bulb wires can go out of the headlight housing and that the ballast power/ground wires can go in. Then just connect all of the wires. Should take 30 minutes. No splicing.

Also, HID's consume less power than halogens. They are 35W per bulb while halogens are 55W per bulb. They only draw more power for the first 10 seconds when the bulbs are igniting. Then the power consumtion drops down to about 7 amps total. Also, they don't dim from loud bass either.

Here's a step by step for what I did:

1) Remove both headlights from the car.

2) Remove the dust caps from both low beam headlights.

3) Drill a half inch hole, or use a dremel.

4) Remove plug from bulb, and pull out the old bulb from socket.

5) Install HID bulb into socket and clamp it in.

6) Take the 2 Wires coming from the bulb, and insert them into the plug from the old bulb. One white=power, One black=ground. The oem plug to the bulb have one red=power, and one black=ground. You can figure what wire goes where from there.

7) Feed rest of wiring through dust cap, twist dust cap on, and cover the hole.

8) You'll then just plug everything in at that point.

I tell you what, I'll take pictures of mine tomorrow. I'll actually do a removal, and then reinstall it all, taking pictures along the way, so you can see each step.

Look for my updated post sometime tomorrow morning, around noonish at the latest. Okay?

OK. So the HID bulbs plug into the stock black plug that plugs into the oem bulbs. The wires coming out the back are for grounding. The ballast still plugs into the headlight? and the harness plugs into the ballast?

I guess Im lost at what wires are coming out the back, and what they are being plugged into.

Actually, their should be 2 sets of wires coming from the bulb. One set is continuous and pretty long. It goes to the connections for the ballast.

The other set should have male spade terminals on them. You'll insert the male spade terminals in to the black OEM connector, power and ground in proper locations.

I promise, I'll post pics tomorrow. They will not be in this thread. I will start a new one, for DIY purposes, and will be including the link to the shop I got them from. I paid $130 for my set, from www.DynastyRacing.com. This company started in Hong Kong, came to Ft. Lauderdale, and are now in Orlando. They are a mechanic shop, big into Subarus. They swapped the motor in Struck1481's 05 XD2 when he blew a piston ring when over boosting. They get the HID's from a major manufacturer in Japan. The price is good, I use the 8K kit, and I love them. And a very easy install. I took about an hour to install them, so I could hide the wiring and do a real nice and clean install.

OOOO I see. So the bulbs plug into the stock OEM connector, and the ballast?

BColeman

Right. Basically the car sends signal to the OEM Bulb connector. Now plugged in there is the harness to the ballast. From the ballast, power is then transferred to the HID bulb.

I posted up a FULL DIY with lots of pictures. If you have questions, let me know there.

Yeah, they pretty much covered everything. It's easy.

Easy as pie. It took me about 30 minutes to do the install. Don't be scared about the install at all.

Sweet man, let me know if you have any problems. I think the pictures say a 1000 words (like ****, ****, damn, cunt, *****, **** again, ****, and some more ****), but you never know if you run into a snag or not.

What brand did you order?

I'm a bit late on this thread, but yes, it's quick and easy. It took me about 45 minutes. The most time I spent was cutting the holes in the dust caps for the headlight assemblies and looking for a place to mount the ballast boxes under the hood.

They should be here tomarrow. Ill make sure to take pics after install.

The reason I went with 8000K over 6000K is because of the brightness. I have driven in front of a 6000 hid kit (keyan), and it is truly blinding. My whole car was lit up, and I had to change lanes, because I could not drive in front of Keyan at all. The 8000K looks like a decent output, that isnt crazy bright.

Yeah, typically the more blue that's in it, the less bright they appear. But I've got an 8K set, and they are pretty darn bright. But they are more blue than white. I've yet to see a whiter set on an XD/XD2 in person yet, so I can't really compare for myself to be sure.

You'll like the 8K though. I can't wait for you to post up pics. I'm waiting for my new headlight to get here, and then I'll be taking night pictures of mine and adding it to my member profile.

Does Keyan have shields? I followed my wife home the other nigh, and she didn't complain at all.

I honestly like the bright white look, especially for the driver.

Would you want to see everything in purple or white?

Thats my opinion. The 6000K does look overall good tho..

I have 6000K with shields, and I love the look.

From doing a little research, it seems like the color for 8000K kits differ, case by case. Some of them look really blue (like 10K), and then some of them look almost all white (with just a hint of blue.) If I dont like it, Ill definately sell it and get the 6000K kit.

I've PM'd you. I'll post up some pics tonight in my Member Profile and put a link here for you to check them out. It doesn't get really dark till about 9:30, so it'll be after that sometime.

I think you'll like the 8k, it's a great compromise between the Super White 6k and the pure Blue 10k.

Exactly. Perfect for people who don't want it too bright or too blue.

Yes sir. I checked out the 6K kit, and I've seen the 10k and 12k kits on cars around town when I lived in Orlando. I wanted something subtlely blue (it's my favorite color, and my car is blue). I too was a little leary when I first installed them and drove with them on. I was prepared for them to be too blue, but only the outside edges of the beams are a bluish tint.

Munky, do you have HIDs yet? If not, I've got a great location to purchase some. Check out my HID Install DIY, there's a link to the place I purchased them. You'll have to email them about them, as they aren't listed in the online catalog. I paid $130 for them. And they are great.

Yeah, I bought 6000k GT HIDs last December. I love them.

I finally got them installed. Took me like 40 min. The headlights look great. Daytime pics coming soon.

Ill get some better pics tonight. They looks almost entirely white, with a small hint of blue. Or even like a pale white.

Here's some pics of what mine look like:

View from on top of hood
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c111/bpc217/HID%20DIY/100_0312.jpg

View from front of car. Notice that the passenger side, the cut off isn't as good as the Driver's side. That is because the passenger side no longer has the eyeline that the driver side has. I am replacing the eyelines with the Airrock ones from Seoulful Racing. These eyelines definitely help in the cutoff, and I think that's why I haven't been bothered by the law.

And this is the view from the Driver's Side without my Yellow fogs on

And a little picture for sh1t's and giggles. I got this from my wife for Christmas, but I didn't feel it belonged on my bike. So I just hung it on the rear view mirror.
