why do most guys think camaros and mustangs are the most awesomely ultimate car to have?
they go fast in a straight line and that's about it (WITH a few exceptions! but those are the ones I'm talking about)
some "friends" confronted me at an auto cross event yesterday and basically gave me crap about my elantra. friend's friend: we'll call him redneck#1, claims his V8 old man car (chevy something) would "whoop" my elantra at the course... said I should have spent my money on a mustang GT.
I invited him to bring his car and (big surprise) he didn't show up. maybe the entry fee was a little pricey?
EDIT: his car: 1980-something IROC-Z (pffff)

In my years around the car biz and dealing with car people in general, the ones that boast the most offer me the least challenge. The guy sittin there watchin the braggart with a sly smile and a closed hood is the one I'd watch out for.
In all honesty, the ol' Fox Body rustangs are a nimble, quick car. The 4th Gen Camaros were rediculously quick for their size and a couple suspension tweaks makes them a force to be dealt with.
IMO, and this is purely my personal feelings here, bashing someone else's car or car choice is the least classy thing a person can do. Even on the interweb. To each his own is my personal feelings.

yeah I have no problems with mustangs or camaros that are fixed up and have owners who are not douches, its just usually those guys who are quick to bash other peoples cars that drive the mustangs and camaros. usually slow ones with lots of primer. on columbusracing.com, in my intro thread, at least 3-5 guys said I should go get a mustang...! arrrrrgh. if I wanted to have the same car as every guy my age I would've bought that. but I didn't!

In general, "douches" will be the ones driving any "sports" car, foreign or domestic. It just so happens that there are more Camaros/Mustangs out there to be had.
The Mustang is the most modified car in history. It you really like tuning and modifying, nothing beats a Mustang from that aspect.

I totally agree. you can do more to a car that has more parts available. and that's the problem: any 20-something jerk can easily modify a mustang and think he has the best car in the world. same goes for civics (but they don't seem to go around telling people "go buy a civic")
not saying mustangs aren't any good, I've seen plenty of guys with REALLY nicely modded clean mustangs.
the iroc-Z is crap though.

See. . .more generalizations with no actual facts to back it up.
The IROC was actually what started the second musclecar craze. They brought out the L98 Tuned Port V8 that offered power over the mustang GT.
But what would I know. . .

Yeah. Who here would actually own a metallic blue '86 Iroc Z-28, with 5.0L TPI, full flowmaster exhaust, and adjustable air-ride suspension? Oh wait...
...and back in "the day" I'd blow the doors off Mustang GTs. Most Elantras wouldn't have a prayer in any race (straight or twisty) with a (properly maintained) Z-28 Camaro or Mustang GT.

Sorry Saturn but Bob is right. Mustangs and Camaros (while not the "most awesomely ultimate car to have") are very good cars both in a straight line and in the auto-X.
Hate the arrogant owner/driver, not the car. Just as many rice-burner owners/drivers have the same arrogance.

that's what I'm saying, it's the guy not the car. the car could be amazing and the owner can still be a douche who thinks he has god's car.
BobMs_wht2k2

Then why would you make idiotic statements like: iroc-Z is crap though.
It just show ignorance to make a generalized statement like that.
Just 25 minutes ago we had a pair if Integra ricer boys in here with their "GSR" and those two were complete morons. Literally. Here, it's the import crowd and their idiotic mentality that kills it.

Yes, but there's a fine line between arrogance and confidence. The Camaro/Mustang owner knows he has a good car, better than the riced Civic.

total agreement, remember i work at carnegie mellon a school FULL of people who have no idea about what 1$ is worth. people its all Porsche, BMW, Mercedes etc. and they all talk down to just about anyone with a cheap car. and then you get the crowd with hoped up dodge/honda and they think that their brand is the only one that should be modded and anything else is lame etc. meanwhile one look and you can tell their all ricers :P
and as for hating certain cars thats just really lame, personally if someone offered me a 07 mustang convertible, id take it, course the v8's sure are thirsty heh. now that my friend has one theyve realy grown on me, i like em alot :D

my friend just bought a 87 mustang GT. The 5.0 has all kinds of engine work done and it was all in primer when he got it....$1500!!!!! STEAL!!! I want one now, but im still holding out for a 280z.

this would be me :).
i agree with everything bob as said and double the comment about fox bodies being ridculous quick around the course. ever seen an SVO out? one of THE best handling mustangs ever produced IIRC and with its little 2.3T was quite a force to be rekowned (<--that looks like crap!) with.
The potential of a car is directly proportional to the person modifying or driving it, just remember that.

I leased a 2000 Mustang GT for three years and it was really a very fun car. It was also reliable. Of course, I didn't brag and drive it like a 'tard.

First off, nice thread, and great conversation. It's actually pleasant to read.
I'm a fan of almost any car out there, within reason. I too have had my share of unwarranted stares and comments, but you know, the big thing to do is let it roll off your shoulders, in one ear and out the other, so to speak. And sometimes, I wonder why I never take my own advice. Oh well, you live and you learn.
But I do agree with saturn to a point, that it's usually the driver that gets no respect from me, not the car. Hell, just watch one episode of Pinks, and you'll see what I'm getting at. Everyone will think their car is better than another's. It's all about pride, ego, and macho-ism.
The good thing about this kind of trash talking is that there is always a way to settle differences. It's called a drag strip, or even an auto-x event. That's where you let the car, and the driver's skills beat each other up. I love it personally, and helps the pride, ego, and macho-ism too.
If I didn't like 4 cylinders, and some inline-6s, I'd own at least one of the following cars:
Iroc-Z
1992 Firebird Trans-Am
Chevy Nova, early 70s
Chevy Malibu
Dodge Charger
67 Shelby GT Stang
1999 Mustang GT (GTR version)
And quite a few others. It's about respect for the vehicle and their beautiful styling. And three of them on my list would be great contenders in many venues of racing. Too bad most people use the newer cars, and that there aren't too many classes available for the older generations of cars.

For some reason i've always liked the like the Iroc-Z in the looks dept over the 80s Fox body.
But here's how i see it. Any car can be good, and a true car enthusiast respects any car.

If I had unlimited $, I would have a Lotus Esprit. Hyundais aren't my first choice for a true sports car, of course. However, since I'm on a limited budget, that is the best I can easily afford.
It's all in what you want to spend to be "cool".
Also, remember, the people who pick on others are the ones with the problem. They want to pick on someone to make themselves feel better, so they'll find someone to vent their frustrations on that does something differently and abuse them about it.
Next time someone at an AutoX event teases you, ask them if they drive their car on a daily basis on the road like most Hyundai drivers, and how much they're spending on gas...

yeah like I said, I invited him to bring his "sweet IROC" out to the event, and he didn't show.
and when I said "the IROC sucks" I mean HIS IROC. I've seen plenty of decent ones.

What a piece of crap. It's probably not an IROC, just a stock Camaro with a 2.5L 4 banger in it!!! That means he'd out-displace us by 0.5 liters!
That would be an interesting challange in AutoX or straight 1/4 mile -- an XD "Economy Car" versus a 2.5L Camaro "Sports Car"!

It's most likely a real IROC. It has the IROC wheels, hood, badging/striping, and I can almost tell the appearance of the IROC decklid lip spoiler.
Mine was the same color, except glossy and nice. That one is not beyond saving, but it needs some help quick to get rid of the cancer.

The pic above is a real IROC-Z. The hood and lower body skirts verify that. It's an '86 with a 305 and a 5-speed:

It's all about supply and demand. In my area you can only find RS auto's. All the good ones are allready owned. That's why I'm waiting for the 09 camaro. It's going to be sweet!

The place that has that car for sale is about 2.5 hours SW of me. If they can pull $5K for that car now, I wonder what my old IROC would be worth?
(P.S. It's sitting in my father's garage in his ownership now, he doesn't do a thing with it... occasionally my mother will drive it to the grocery store or something, but other than that it's mostly original with about 92K on it).
