Hi fellow XDers...
Okay, my short story is I bought my 2004 Elantra GT new when my Pontiac died and I really wanted a new car (I wanted a warranty, safety, etc). So I bought the GT because the price was right, and at the time I was also carrying a $600/month payment on our other vehicle. It's a 5-door auto car, and it's been a decent ride. However, the 2.0L and the auto is a horrible combination when performance is the goal - 10.2 sec 0-60mph is just painful. I've been bugging the wife to let us trade it in on a used 3-series BMW or something, but then I got the bright idea...
Grab the 2.7L V6 and 5 speed tranny out of a Tiburon and drop it in the Elantra's engine bay. Obviously there'd be a lot of customization (the motor mounts won't be the same, the half shafts and connections will be different, the wiring harness likely won't be compatible, etc), but I'm a tinkering sort of guy, and I think I might give it a shot. What do you guys think? I'm not looking to build a race car - the stock 170-180hp will be fine for me. I'm looking for the torque that V6 has - that instant kick in the back when you mash the gas. Kind of like V8-lite! LOL!
I also have plans for 17" rims, 245-mm width tires, lowering the springs, some paint, and a stereo upgrade. But the V6/5spd would be at the top of my list. From what I've seen on Google, nobody has tried this before. Do you know of anyone that has done something like this? I understand the 2.7L in the Sonata is the same engine, so I might go that route (as there are a lot more Sonotas in the junk yards than Tiburons).
