hey guys i just bought a EF header.

and I was wondering if there is an actual DIY guide to putting them in.

because all i found was this one= http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17316&highlight=headers

this install is a piece of piss. I am pretty sure with the header you have that the PS pump and bracket will have to come off in order for the left hand side of the flange to fit under it. Other than that its easy, remove the stock heatshield, remove the 9 (I think) bolts from the manifold and the 2 bolts on the exhaust flange at the bottom of it. Remove stock manifold.

If I amay make a suggestion here, take out the radiator fans when you remove the manifold and install the header, things will go in and out much much easier.

^ What he said, although I never removed the fans, I found it unnecessary.

One thing to add though, you have to install it from the bottom up, it's easier to make everything go in without getting scratches on stuff.

Also, for the P/S Pump, loosen the bolt holding the pump to the top bracket, loosen the bolt on the bottom. The top of the P/S pump will now slide back and forth. Slide it towards the engine and slip off the belt. Remove the 2 bolts on the pump that you just loosened, and slide it over to the left (when you are facing the engine). Now remove the 3 bolts holding the top bracket on the head. And there you go, you are ready to remove and install the header.

on my xd i didn't have to remove the p/s pump. When we put them on nicks car he opted to cut a section out to make it easy to get them on and off.

also, it should be noted on some headers its easier from the bottom while on others its easier through the top. I forget which way the EF had to come out.

yea guys, i was surprised myself on how fast they came in. I think it was about a week or so.

but i ran into two promblems when trying to install them.

1) the bolts on the heat shield were to tight and i couldnt get anything to take them off. I'm going to wait till tomorrow in the morning when the engines cold

2)my down pipe is welded on. and its going to be hard to take it off.

any suggestions?

lol....he has a point if you cant get the bolts off the heat shield maybe you should not be doing this install...

I used in impact gun on the bolts i could get to, on the ones i couldnt, i used a breaker bar. as for the install, i machined off the top left corner of the EF header so i didnt have to remove the PS pump.

What exactly are you talking about being welded? First of all, you aren't a turbo charged car, so you therefore do not have a DOWN PIPE. You have the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, then MID PIPE. So please explain what you are talking about.

As far as the heat shield bolts, it's easier to remove the bolts when it's warm, NOT cold. And it requires the right tools, not a pair of pliers. You need a long socket wrench and decent sockets. A torque wrench is needed to, in order to bolt the new header up. I believe it's 35 ft. lbs. of torque for those bolts.

nah i think what hes trying to say is that when he got a custom exhaust done, the shop mite of cut the exhaust pipe right after the 2nd O2 censor. and now he has one long *** tube..

am i right?

If you are going to do anything to your car yourself do this, its a matter of a few bolts...theres no way you can write you motor off from messing up this install, its just one out and the other in.

Munky is right, take a look around and see what other guys engines look like after a header install, look at your and figure out what needs to change.

Its an easy job just do your homework first.

That almost makes sense, except that the mid-pipe of the new header is designed to bolt directly to the 2nd cat. So unless he removed the second cat, there should not be any cutting and welding done. He's got the EF header, which is a direct bolt on (unlike the SSA or OBX ones), so even then, welding shouldn't be necessary.

bhurlin
07-22-2007, 06:12 PM
The new pipe is not in place to bolt to the second cat, just yet. But we have done the mods to clear the pump and other brackets allready, the new ones should be here in about 3 weeks.

Hey guys,

I just found that when the people that changed my muffler. They took off everything. Its just the header and pipping until the muffler. and thats why its welded on.

owned....time for you to get a sawzall

BColeman
07-23-2007, 01:11 AM
They would only have done that if you asked them to, since it's illegal for the removal of any emissions item on your car. Will definitely need a sawsall and a welder for the install.

here is what you should do:

1. Take the whole exhaust pipes OFF (everything)
2. Bolt on NEW Header.
3. Turn car ON
4. Drive to 'another' muffler shop!

:D

- Oh yeah, wake up as many neighbors as possible :)

BColeman
07-23-2007, 08:56 AM
The right thing to do here is locate a flange that matches the one on the mid-pipe of the header, where it would normally bolt to the cat. Take the flange and whole header assembly to a shop. They can install the header, cut the exhuast system up and weld on the flange and bolt it all together. You DO NOT want to ruin the expensive EF header by cutting and welding it.

saturn
07-23-2007, 09:09 AM
isn't there a cat coming off of the exhaust manifold before the midpipe?

is removing this "a bad thing" (should I put another high-flow cat on the system somewhere, or will the one do)?

BColeman
07-23-2007, 09:14 AM
On the OEM Manifold, yes there is a cat. And then there is one after the OEM Mid-pipe. This guy here has no second cat, and has new piping from the OEM mid-pipe (where the flexpipe is at) welded on all the way back.

He bought an EF header, which gets rid of the front Cat, so there fore, he'll be running cat less.

Saturn, one will be fine. Emissions requires the front one and rear one, performance requires a high flow cat and only one of them.

saturn
07-23-2007, 09:21 AM
there's no emissions testing in columbus and as far as I know the e-check program is dead anyway (won't be coming to columbus) so I'm not worried about that, I'm just worried about CELs and noise.

and yeah I know, the search feature is my friend.

jimbo3n21
07-23-2007, 02:09 PM
yea, i think im going to change the header at my friends house because theres a muffler shop 1/2 block away. so I wont wake up to many people.

and yes saturn, i had replaced my muffler after i got the car. so the shop that changed it, cut off things and welded the pipping on.

saturn
07-23-2007, 02:44 PM
right, like I said, I'm just worried about my car being pissed off with only 1 cat. I'm going to keep the stock piping, cat, and resonator/muffler until I can afford some alternatives (high-flow cat, cherry bomb as a resonator, and a nice muffler)

redbull_ng
07-23-2007, 03:06 PM
This is what i have..

OEM mid-pipe --- 2.5" pipe --- cherry bomb (glasspack) --- 2.5" pipe --- Tip ;)

I finally got to install the header. It wasnt to hard, all i had to take off was the fan. I will try to post up pics as soon as i can.

Cypher
09-06-2007, 08:35 PM
you took off the fan? thats un-nessecary. I had the exact same headers and could remove the WHOLE exhaust from the header all the way to the muffler in 45 minutes (did it at evan's dad's house in ohio last july). You just have to feed them up from the bottom of the car and it works fine.

jimbo3n21
09-07-2007, 12:26 AM
It is because we instead from the top not under the car. so I just took off the fan put the header on and then put the fan back on. It wasnt to much hassle.

BTW jimbo3n21, how much are they charging you to install the rest of the exhaust ... and people should always ask for flange when going to an exhaust shop, Felix did that and I was amazed at the price, thought it would be more expensive then that!

KeWLKaT
09-07-2007, 05:24 PM
I did get a good deal though, the manager mistakenly told me it's 50$/hour when it was 77$ when you brought your own parts, so I got out of it pretty cheap.

I HAVE taken it off in 45 minutes, i have evan and nick as witnesses to this because they took the exhaust off of nick's in that amount of time as well. Both cars, header-exhaust off in 45 minutes and not a second more.

You wanna call bull**** on me thats fine but you are making a grave mistake because I do not lie.

I have had mine off twice. and the second time was just last week i had the whole thing off in about an hour. so it is very feasable to have it off in 45 minutes. P.s. I was along side the road when i took it off in a hurry. But its all new from the cat back by like 2 months so very little rust at all. I did have the the conveinience of having ramps in my trunk at the time along with most of my tools but still an hour.

You, sir, are a damn thief and deserve to be arrested, and thrown into jail to get gangraped.

What the hell? Of course you need to pay... I hope they have your info or liscence plate so they can come steal their exhaust back from your car one night.

I can't believe this. I'm quoting your post because you just allegedly admitted to thievery online. I hope some cop sees this so you can learn your lesson.

I thought you sounded odd in your posts, but it seems you're odd in real life too.

There are quite a few shops around here like that. They don't charge for the simple stuff. Les Schwab is a good example in my area. If it doesnt cost over 100$ its usually free as long as you don't abuse it.
