So, my mom's CD Player in her Galant apparently has problems with making any/all CD's skip after they've ben playing for a while. I figured I'd just get her an OEM replacement. This is one from LKQ (same guys I got my seats from). The thing is, they say I need to go a dealer in order to get the security code, is that true? Is there any way to get around that? Will they try to charge me for it?

Sure, the dealer will change it, but they'll prob. charge you an arm and a leg. I know the security code thing from some of the late 90's GMs was a PITA. Anytime you unhooked the battery, you'd need to re-enter the security code. I believe each head-unit had it's own code - to prevent theft and swapping. If this guy selling it doesn't have the code, I would imagine the only way to get it would be a dealer, as putting it online or something would defeat the purpose of the security code.

With the price of the unit + shipping, and the PITA of having to deal with the dealer, you're proabably starting to creep-up on low-end aftermarked CD players, that don't have the code.

Have you tried using one of those 'cleaning CDs' with the little brush on it? Maybe the lense is dirty on your mom's unit.

Sometimes it is on a sticker on the fuse box under the hood.
If not, take the CD player out and get the serial number off the back.
Have the VIN number handy.
Many dealers will give you the code over the phone.
Just call around till you find one.
I hade the same problem with my Galant when I had the battery out for a bit.

If a dealer does charge you for it, it will not be more that $20.00

The problem with that is that the code listed for the car will not be the code for the new headunit he receives... that would be listed as the code for the previous car.

Yup, you are right. Brain Fart. Some dealers still may give you the code over the phone.
Check out www.galantforums.com
Do a search for it, there are a few guys there that work at mitsubishi dealerships that may help you out.
