Ok for the past couple of days my car started rattling. When cold.

Today I checked out everything and realized it's coming from my high-flow cat.

If I shake my exhaust something INSIDE (no, not the heatshield) rattles, but seems to go away when hot. So when I shift, or take off, since the engine rocks a bit it makes it rattle.

Now... What could this mean? Clogged? Or just loose? If it aint dangerous I'll put it down on my priority list...

Comments?

EDIT:

Here's a video of the thing: http://youtube.com/watch?v=OYwCBzZ-9aM

Fuel, oil and antifreeze cause a different type of brick destruction. Under normal operating conditions, the catalytic process doesn’t begin until temperatures inside a converter reach 500 to 600 degrees (F). If air/fuel ratio is on target, and the exhaust is free of contaminants, internal converter temperature stays at about 1200 degrees. But when unburned fuel enters the picture, temperatures can reach 2200 degrees and either burn the precious metals out of the washcoat, or literally cause a melt down of the bricks. Extremely high temperatures can also result in destruction of the mat that's wedged between the bricks to the converter case.

I'd say you've got a case of cat failure, which probably isnt critical unless you're hard on the car

It is the honeycomb rattling inside the housing. I had this problem on my old Camaro. It's not a bug deal until the block turns sideways, and plugs up the passage. I would do something about it soon before it gets to be a bigger problem.

^ I'm with him.

The deadening material inside the cat has separated from the housing, and it will soon cause a blockage.

You should certainly replace it before putting the turbo back on.

But WHY would it happen?

This thing has like 20,000 km on it at most.

Hmmm could be the oil dumping into my exhaust back in january...?

All that heat, coupled with the oil, may have done the damage, but I don't know for sure.

Let's say I did dump about 3 quarts of oil into it so that might be a good reason, ha.

Now I have to go cat shopping again, yay....

i guess ill get the wideband's O2 bung welded in at the same time...

The oil didn't help things any, that's for sure. But, you could have just gotten a bad cat from the start. Anything man-made is bound to have issues. Anyway, I would just get a good quality piece and forget about it.

What do you guys recommend?

I don't want to spend too much cash.

Also I heard I can get cash back for a bad cat at junkyards or something (keyan was saying)?

is there even a difference between the two last ones lol

WTF is that air tube? lol

Never mind, I just googled it. Seems like it's an older type of Cat system...

Felix, get either one of the magnaflows. You will want a name brand to keep from having the same issue again.

But mine was a dynomax, lol, last time I checked it's not supposed to be ''cheap''

bring your cat to a junkyard while the honeycomb is still one peice inside it, and they will pay you 30-90USD for it (they melt down the metals inside and make a profit)

BY THE WAY;

get it fixed before you put the turbo on. one of the biggest problems with the old toyota mr2 turbos was that the cat would fail and get sucked back into the turbo....destroying the turbo.

Well, dynomax is not a cheap one by any means, but like I said, you may have just gotten a bad one.

Well its too late for me to chime in but I would have suggested you get the Magnaflow one, preferably with a metalic core. Ever consider one of those actuator exahust bypass things? There is one that is opened with boost, this way when you really honk on the gas you arent torturing your cat as much.

KeWLKaT

Well I did get a Magnaflow high-flow one so it's ok ;)

I saw those bypass things but budget is tight right now.

Felix... That is really crap! I have had converters take a dump before, but not like that. I like the floating piece that said "Hello" to you.

My cat started to rattle one day, too. It turned out he'd eaten too many plastic toy mice, which were rattling around in his stomach.

(Sorry... when I saw the title of this thread, I couldn't resist) ;)

Well hopefully the one I have now will be better, the guy told me it's made for handling more extreme conditions than the crap I had installed before...

Good luck on this one. When are you re-installing the turbo?

KeWLKaT

Don't know. Frankly I have all the parts, I just need the time.

Actually I'm lying. The main thing holding me back is the intake manifold, as soon as I get that sucker ported, it'll probably get me into the installation, since I have to remove it already for the dual fuel rail kit and all.
