that's a pretty good price.
I'm going to try and get my father in law to sell me his 02 WRX. It's not the STI model, but it's still pretty fast, and factory turbo.
I have been thinking about my next car because we will need two when my wife starts teaching in september, and I want it to have enough power to keep me happy. I was looking at a bunch of faster cars, being that my insurance rating is the highest that it can be at the moment. I was also thinking though, that I want to get something with AWD because if I'm going to have a fast car, I don't want to kill it in the winter, or have to garage it during the winter either.
So WRX is at the top of my list. I would hold out for an STI, but I'm trying to get my father in laws car on the cheap.

This car has everything I've wanted in a car..AWD and factory turbo.
The only thing I would change is that big *** wing on the back.
I would never, ever, in a million years, buy a WRX/STI, EVO, etc used.
Why's that?
I'm only looking at used because I definitely can't afford a new one.

Because it's a car with a lot of power. What do people do with cars that have a lot of power, especially in the age-range of people that desire these cars?

Beat the living crap out of it. Good point.
If I ever did buy a used one, I would definitely make sure that it was maintained fairly well, and everything was in good working condition before signing my life away to it.

another reason I'm trying to get my father in laws car. I know exactly how well he has maintained it over the years, and how well he's treated it.
Apart from that, I completely agree with you on not buying one of these used.
they're making it kind of hard to buy one new, with the 08's looking so gross though, and with no news of an STI in 08 either.

+1... any type of DD with a turbo... I don't trust people knowing how to let it cool down properly. They'll just drive it (hard), park it, shut it off right away and go... no thanks!

most of these factory insalled turbos are liquid cooled, so they dont need as much, if any cool down time at all...honestly how much real hard driving do you do in the run of a day? Turbo or not you dont just jump in a vehicle and go screaming down the road for an ice cream, the effect wears off after a while and then the car is just a car. I know lots of guys here in town with SRT-4, STi, and WRX that dont punish them all the time, everyone mistreats a car a little regardless of whats under the hood.

that forrester STi is awesome... I might actually trade in my elantra for one if I can afford it... it's so goofy yet really cool (it's like a WRX and a forrester had a really ugly baby)

There aren't many "brands" that I would choose if I didn't pick a Hyundai, but Subaru would be high on the list (especially the Indiana-built trio). The new '08 Tribeca looks awesome.

seriously...especially not for that price... the most I'd pay for something like that would be 19k
if I'm going to buy a used sports car for anywhere near 30k...

you see, I'm still sticking with the sti over that. Along the lines of not wanting to garage my second car for half the year, and not wanting to kill it if I don't garage it.

I actually worked with a Gentleman that drove his 95 vette year-round. Snow, ice, rain, sunshine. All of it. That's what is great about the vettes, they are great DD.

Just thinking about the amount of snow we get here, and the sub-zero temperatures that regularly hit us, I wouldn't trust it knowing how quickly ice forms under snow.
but that's also me. I might just have enough money to pick up a nicer car, but I wouldn't have the money to replace it if I really f-ed up. Hence why I would want something awd in the winter, if I was going to have a more powerful car.

id rather get an evo8/9, thats just me tho. i think they look way better, and out perform the subaru also... but i cant afford either so it aint something i should worry about. lol the only real next option after the elantra, id consider to be a tC... i like those cars.... hopefully after college! :)

I guess I could see your point. we dont really have winter here. a subrau would be a fun sports car no matter what the conditions

I couldn't bring myself to ask my father in law if I could buy his car from him, so I went to the dealership to see if I could afford an 07 on the rollout before the 08's (which they're selling now, so gosh darned ugly). The guy said that they didn't have any 07's left, but that they had an 04 STI that just came off lease. The guy was a doctor and babied his car, couldn't modify it because it was a lease (I would never buy a modified WRX), and so I said I would take it for a test drive.
Great Zeus' Beard...what a car. I thought the WRX was fast (it is), this was so much crazier. I went back to the dealership with the guy and he asked if I wanted him to crunch numbers. I thought that there was no way in heck I could afford it, but thought I would give it a shot. He went away to the sales managers office, and started to look it over with her. They came back and offered it to me for 265 bi-weekly. Which is MORE than affordable for me. So I checked with insurance, I can get it for 100 a month on that car. I couldn't believe it, this car is actually affordable.
My wife and I are finally both working full time at the same time, and we can afford a car like this.
My next step was to get it past the wife, who didn't want me spending 3,000 on a cheap car because she didn't want to be a 2 car family. There was no way that she would ever let me get the car. She hasn't said no, and actually might say yes. I find out tomorrow what her answer is.
If so, I put the deposit down on tuesday and get myself into something a little more powerful. We will keep the elantra for my wife, seeing as it's really her car anyway. Man alive, this is a good weekend. Here's hoping it works out.

I really didn't want to test drive the STI, I thought it would be too much car. Just wanted to test drive the WRX with 230hp. Once I got a hold of that sixth gear and the extra 70hp *not to mention the extra torque* I was hooked.

it hasn't happened yet. It still has to get past the wife (who is surprisingly thinking about it) and past the dealership credit check. I've got good credit, so it should be no troubles, but stuff like this has a way of f-ing itself up right when you don't want it to.
