Well, my brothers desktop keeps failing. I've installed windows on it twice, and after about a week it develops a problem where when you boot it up, right after windows starts an error comes up "windows has encountered a failure...blah blah send error report?" and if you click either choice, it pops up again and again until you restart....OR the computer will restart itself if the processor starts to actually think. in the bios are setting for what level of processing power you want to run "minimum" "normal" "fast" and there is another setting which sets at what core processing temp does it reboot itself. with the reboot temp set the highest and the processing speed set the lowest, once you try to watch a flash movie, or load more than one webpage at once, the computer reboots itself. Today it actually didn't boot into windows at all. it got to the loading screen and said some major windows file is missing. wtf.

Well i'm sick and tired of it. The computer has a new hard drive, and i'm looking to either buy a new computer or rebuild the one I have with a new motherboard and drives and everything. But i've never rebuilt a computer before. Or built a copmuter at all. i've always bought pre-assembled.

Suggestions? On purchasing individual parts or a comptuer as a whole.... all i need is the tower, i have all the basics (monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc)

help !

Maybe you dont know what you are doing? I would check the temps with SpeedFan. One of your fans may be dieing. There could be a ton of reasons for random restarts.

the temps showing when i check the bios are actually no where near the reboot limit (this is while the computer isnt doing anything but idling) and the speeds of the fan its displaying are fine. the one fan on top of the 6 cubic inch heat sink sitting on the processor is grazing 6000rpm. i'm sure that's fast enough?

edit: its a 1.2GHz AMD processor with 512MB of ram with a geforce FX video card or something like that.

Usually the AMD processors are pretty stable. 6,000 rpm is getting up there; you may want to consider looking into a different AMD processor (thus you keep the same motherboard) and fan to see what does happen. There may also be a corrupted bios file>>you may want to reload the bios from a clean source.

I have built a couple of PCs, not a pro by a far shot. I have had really good luck with newegg.com. They offer both amd and intel products and their prices are pretty good.
