Many more missing. Homeland security has stated that it does not appear to be Terrorism related, but we shall see.

That's crazy. I HATE driving on bridges over water... maybe there's a reason for that?

Being America, you know there will be at least one lawsuit involved in the cleanup (especially for those who died). On another note, it might be interesting trying to explain this incident to your insurance co.

What seems odd is the whole span collapsed. Even if it was being repaired, a section still would be intact if a collapse were to occur.

i cant believe what im seeing. why would ppl in charge let rush hour traffic on a bridge thats under construction and over water. this will remind me to never trust the authorities when they say something is safe.

I saw it on the news tonight. It's really unfortunate. It reminds me of the San Francisco earthquake that flattened the bridges there.

Funny you mention that, a member on CrookedH posted about the bridge, saying he uses it every day to get to work. he lives about 15 minutes from it.

Makes you start to wonder about the qualifications of these construction companies. I'm thinking back to the collapse of the ceiling in the Boston tunnel and now two bridges within a day of each other, all construction "accidents"

They haven't concluded this is a construction accident yet. The construction taking place was supposedly "resurfacing" (repaving the bridge deck), and had nothing to do with the structural side of things. They may determine that the weight of the construction equipment, or the cars stuck on the bridge due to lane closures, lead to this - but I'd be surprised if the resurfacing alone was to blame.

My buddies dad was there when it went down. He got hit by a peice of rubble and they took him to HCMC. I think he's ok though. I heard the Star tribune was going to report 9 dead in the paper today, but havent seen it yet

It sucks, and I feel bad for all those people.
On the other hand, why in the hell did they think it was a terrorist attack? It's MINNESOTA!!! and it's 1 bridge, think before you talk newspeople....

^^When the newscaster mentioned that authorities didn't feel it was a terrorist event, I rolled my eyes. Oh brother.
At first reports stated that the bridge was thoroughly inspected in 2005 and 2006 and found structurally safe and sound. Now reports are stating that people warned of a possible collapse as far back as 1990. I can see people fabricating memos to save their *** now.
The US roadways are in bad shape ... the interstate highway system is very old and in need of a lot of attention. People need to step up and put the tax money where it's needed ... not for "conventions" at luxury resorts to discuss the problems. So much money is spent on "administration" of the money that there isn't enough to get the work done.
I cross four bridges that span three different rivers on my way to work and I have thought briefly to myself ... what would I do if the bridge collapsed? It's kind of creepy to see it actually happen.

Roads aren't bad everywhere. The roadway systems in our area are generally in great condition where I live. I guess living in one of the richest counties in the US is a good thing after all.
Still, things happen, I don't think this is something that can be totally avoided.

I heard the same thing about authorities warning of danger in 1990. If the bridge was deemed to be structurally deficient that long ago, why was nothing done?
It's not cool.

The roads here in the Portland Metro area are in rather good condition as well although that's just a very minute portion of the interstate roadway system. There is more to what you see on the surface. The roads and bridges may be well paved, that doesn't mean they are structurally sound.
Somebody spoke of the video of the bridge going down. Here's a link. I-35W bridge collapse (http://www.katu.com/home/video/8876162.html?video=pop&t=a)

your right! because i was looking around and i came across that it was rated about 52% or something back in the 90's. looks like some people like to gloss things over lol.

Thought about this today as I was stuck in traffic on a bridge. This is one of those bridges that shakes every time a big truck moves on it and it freaked me the hell out!

We have a bridge in the city (one of many) that has two decks each deck carrying traffic an opposite direction across the river. When you are sitting in traffic on one deck and traffic on the other deck is flying by, the bridge undulates in swells of about a foot and a half. It's very unnerving. You wouldn't think a concrete and steel structure would stand so much movement. It's extra creepy because the side of the bridge have short Jersey barriers on the sides so it feels like you could fly right off the edge.
Here's a couple pictures of the Marquam Bridge
