update -

i showed my g/fs dad this (mind you, he is out of work for 8 months due to shoulder surgery, still has like 4 to go), and he's like "im gonna do that". i figured he was BSing until he asked me to make a list of the stuff he needs

he went to radio shack, spent a few bucks there, and then went to wallmart or something, they forgot to scan the CD burner, but still de-magnitized it, and of course, he didnt say anything. he called to tell me he had 11 whole dollars wrapped up in this

im probably going over there tonight to try this out with him and see if we can get it to work. i cant wait.

well we attempted it last night. found out that soldering anything onto that tiny diode (its friggin 5mm wide), is a *****. we wasted about 70% of the time trying to solder it, and then her dads ancient soldering iron broke. he said his dad has a brand new one hes going to get today and we're gonna try to finish it up
