Are you talking about just Elantras, just Hyundais, all cars or what?

In any event, click that link mtl posted and you should find what you are looking for. The Elantra has only had one engine since 2001, with two versions. The Beta II for 01-03 (until the late 03s that have some of the CVVT components) and the Beta II with CVVT for the 04-current. I'm sure others could point out a lot of the smaller differences.

As for the previous Elantras, the 96-00 had a Beta I engine (1.8l and 2.0l depending on year/trim/etc). And before that the original Elantras had a Mitsubishi engine (which is why you'll see they are popular for swapping a 4g63 or 4g63t engine into).

What do I need to know about the engine in my car? What kind of oil do it like, what are the common problems etc.?

Basically, use oil per your owners manual. For the filter, I recommend using the OEM Hyundai filter you buy at a dealer, or Purolator brand. There have been problems reported with some aftermarket filters resulting in oil starvation (Fram seems to be the main culprit there). Hyundai even put out a TSB about this but didn't "name names" as far as offending brands goes.

If you have an automatic transmission, they are good as long as you use the recommended SP-III fluid. Mercon and Dexron will trash the tranny. Some people maintain using synthetic with the right additives is okay, but Hyundai won't honor any warranty if anything but SP-III is used. You can only get SP-III at Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and maybe some Chrysler dealerships.

There really aren't that many "common problems" with the Elantra engines other than a few sensor problems. The only things I can think of off the top of my head is that some people have had the TPS (throttle position sensor) go bad, and a few people have had a CPS (crankshaft position sensor) go bad. Poke around the forum, especially the "Help" section and you'll see what people have had trouble with.

Generally, if you leave your engine stock or do some minor engine mods like a cold air intake and / or cat-back exhaust, you really shouldn't have many problems if you maintain the engine (oil, etc).

If your car has higher mileage, you should check to see if the timing belt was replaced, and check the oil periodically to make sure it doesn't get low. You may also need to replace the fuel filter and spark plugs, too.

It has 0 miles. The reason I ask about oil is Subaru recommends a 5w-30, and people are seeing trashed bearings with that weight, and most are using 10-40. That is insider knowledge you know what I mean? Thanks for the tip about the tranny, I will just follow my manual.
