October Meeting in MD: MD/DC/VA/DE?

A handful of us over at eclub are planning to meet up pretty soon, in about a month near Columbia, MD. Allentown was fun but it was a 6+ hours of driving, and it's been a while since I've seen a VA/MD/DC/DE(?) meet. We're aiming for mid-October but we're a pretty flexible bunch. We have about half a dozen interested so far over there. I'm sure there's a bunch more over here.

I'd prefer something near a park but I'll have to scout locations for that. Certainly there's Columbia Mall and that big shopping center off Dobin Rd if we just want a parking lot. We could do Greenbelt Park, too. I'm more familiar with it. TGI Fridays is a drive across the street.

winc complains that Columbia adds another hour to his 4-hour drive from NC. Apparently there is some sort of limit to his maddness. Greenbelt would shave half an hour or so for him. Springfield VA would be even better for him and the VA people, including James and Cypher. winc traded for a new fake Elantra GT but I guess he still likes us (Saab9-3).

yes first hand experience..... but if we actually wanted to race other cars... i'm sure we could whip up on those Denali's with 26" Spinners and 2,000 lbs of Audio crap... of course they'd get the envy of being loaded with female scantily clad passengers... and drunken... but thats okay.. we have Beta2's.

video footage running through Powder Mill Road or Good Luck Road would be cool... but if you do columbia there's a short stint on 100 that looks like the freeway on the matrix...

Arundel Mills is a huge mall.. might be crowded.... Columbia's Best Buy moved to a new location.. so the lot is pretty empty since half of the site is still undeveloped (since last month.. haven't been there since)

Yeah so Columbia itself is pretty commercial, if we just want a parking lot and restaurants that'd be a good place to go - right of 175W, for example. If we want a park... Rockburn Branch Park is nice. Lots of softball fields, large parking lot and easy to get to: 39.218307,-76.763449
Greenbelt Friday's... yeah... let's say that's the only place I've ever had X-rated strip club advertisements placed on my windshield. The park is more for hiking than parking. Howard Duckett park is less of a park and more of a kids softball/soccer place. Bleh. 39.12351,-76.884073
And there's this rather underutilized little park right next to I-95, a mile from me: 39.038203,-76.930733 but depite being right on 95, it's somehow a pain to get to it. The shortest path is one-way... out :(

Powder Mill road on the east side, through the agricultural research center is nice, so is Springfield Road and my favorite, Beaver Dam Road (it's getting rough, but it's narrow, woodsy, undulating, twisting... does that sounds sexual?)

The other thing about the Columbia area is that it's all pretty new, residential and chain retail stores. It's pretty, but if we're looking for a place to be working on cars a bit... I don't know a place where it wouldn't draw the "get out" kind of attention. The Beltsville/Laurel area I know has sections with a more industrial bent where working on cars wouldn't be as unusual or frowned upon.

I'm 28 and I've only been to strip clubs twice and once was my bachelor party. The other was... showcase theater in Beltsville.... sigh. I'm going to scope out a few places this week but we still have the "Nice Place," vs. "Work on Cars," tension here.

There's a place in Glen Burnie... bay, lift, lights, oil drain pan and air pressure for $8 for 20 minutes, or $18/hr. Impact wrench is another $2.50 per session/car. The one bump is... they're not open on weekends. :( If people are really interested, I could try to convince them but that would imply an appointment.
It's called Self Service Auto Repair, if anyone has heard of it. We could just do Laurel, MD which has lots of car repair/upgrade places, restaurants and large parking lots (e.g. Laurel mall with several large retailers closed down..)

Oh, there's also a self-serve junkyard on Route 1 in that area. I went by today. They have a reasonable mixture of all cars but no XDs. But they do have a few J2s, old Accents, a couple of Excels, one 03+ Tib V6 GT with a rear sway bar, older tib with at least two alloy wheels (same as XD alloys), a 03+ Sonata with 2+ alloys (which fit, ask bob) a handful of old Spectras and a one or two semi-recent Spectras. If there are any parts in common people are interested in, I took pictures.

Columbia Crossing Circie has big parking lots and: Romano's Macaroni Grill, Famous Dave's BBQ, Don Pablo's mexican, Red Robin Burgers, Long Horn Steakhouse, Lone Star Steakhouse, Fuddruckers, Noodles & Co, Chipotle, Bertucci's, Green Turtle, and if you drive a few blocks there's an Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Bob Evans, Ruby Tuesdays, TGI Friday's, Applebees... I think that's enough typing - just about every major chain in a 1mi radius.

This is what I think: The Glen Burnie bay/lift rental is out - only a few of us want to work on cars and most don't need a lift, and it's closed anyway. Those two other parks are nice but too isolated. But we can't eat, cruise or take pictures of everyone until everyone arrives, so while we wait... let's work on cars. Thus we should meet where we can do some light work to kill time. I think it's Columbia vs. Laurel and Laurel is more mod-friendly.

Columbia. Tons of restaurants, parking, easy to get to from I-95, Rt29 or 32 and a pretty place. Unfortunately nobody works on cars in pretty places. A risk.
Laurel. Also many restaurants, good parking, further from I-95 with more stoplights, not so pretty. Might not draw so much attention, lots of auto upgrade/repair places nearby on Route 1.

Is anyone interested in a dyno? There are two DynoJets a few miles away. One says they charge $75 for 3 pulls, or rent out for $125/hr if you really know how to use one. Might give us a discount on the $75 price if there's a handful of people, maybe.
