: Engine replacement Question

Hi Everyone
I have a question that I have not been able to answer by searching the internet. My 2002 elantra GT now has 120,000 miles and rather than change the timing belt, water pump and also now the clutch, I wanted to just change the engine out with one from a crashed elantra. Does anyone know whether an engine from a 2003/2004 elantra GLS will fit into a 2001/2002 GT?
If anyone is wondering why I would think of doing this - well because by the time I do all the work and go through all the expense to repair my existing engine I may only get another 30 to 50 thousand miles from it where as a replacement engine with 20,000 mile on it seem more worth while making the effort for.
Also the drive boots are failing so I have a lot of work.
Thanks in advance wishing everyone a great day.
Joe

In all honesty, a decently maintained Beta should be good for 200k. I've seen many J2's with 190-200k.

As for an overall engine swap, If you DON'T go ahead and change the belts, waterpump and clutch before putting it in, you'd be stupid. There's no telling how old the ones on the engine are, nor how long it's been out in the weather.

My $.02, just change what you need and enjoy the car.

um wow, you want to swap the motor for a lower mileage one? I don't see the reason to. I have about 118k on my personal car and its been through quite alot and I still trust it, of course i am particularly anal when it comes to maintence on my cars.

Maybe I can have your old one? It's just scrap anyway right?

My buddie's J2 has 230,000 on it....runs perfect.

Anyway....back to your question.

Any engine will swap from 2001-2003. Some engines in late 2003 are CVV2 and won't swap directly. Keep in mind that the engine you need is MAP based and anything late 2003+ are MAF based.

Otherwise....I would just fix what's bad too. But if you have the $$ and time....I say Good Luck.

Any other questions...pm me.

To answer the question: Yes, you *could* swap out your engine with a later GLS. There is no difference between a GT and a GLS engine. The only thing is that late 2003 at later engines were CVVT engines (they have a MAF sensor on the intake). These wouldn't be a straight change out because they have different ECUs. Most 2003s do not have CVVT.

I've done a swap from a crashed 2003 GT with 50k less miles, everything was done in one week buy 2 friends and me.

Why change the engine if it runs good? Engines should run more than 350,000 miles with regular maintanance.
