Ok so we have a 2001 Pontiac GrandAm GT
The car is fun as hell to drive. Fast, but uncomfortable as hell, but fast, well... fast for a V6.
I look under the hood the other day and notice that the belt is a lil tore up. So i get me a new gatorback. Im all ready to put the stupid thing on. We figure out the tensioner setup, in the proccess of taking the belt off and then i stop and take a closer look.
The ****ING BELT IS AROUND THE ENGINE MOUNT!:kick: SO, I have to take the ****ing motor mount of to get the ****ing belt replaced. This would be fine but i dont own a god damn ****ing autoshop! what the **** are these people thinking?!?!?!

my best friend (ferret who just joined) had one of those. He would just get someone to quote him the price of replacing a belt before they realized it was a grand am sitting outside. :) Yeah thats a PITA

Thats gm engineering at its finest right there. let me tell ya I absolutely hate everything about gm's newer vehicles. from like 1996 and up all gone down the crapper to work on.

calm down. alot of cars i've seen are like that: the betas, mitsubishi motors (duh), even hondas have them like that from what i've been told.

You don't have to remove the entire mount (if I remember right). You just have to pull out a bolt, and a spacer can be removed (although it is a pain) to remove the belt.

beta engines are like that?
Its not that we cant do it, it is that we werent ready for that and we didnt have the tools.
To pull that spacer you gotta jack up the engine though.

He was talking about the accessory belt. The 3.1/3.4 motors have a timing chain. I don't know of many fwd cars that don't have a mount in the way of the timing belt.

How can you not have the tools to remove the engine mount? All you would need is a socket.....????
No need to jack the engine as there are still 3 mounts left.... Just a socket...

you dont need to jack the engine up to keep it secure?

The two side mounts held mine up. I didn't even need the jack to get the bolts in the roll stops.
