I think that's a chinese phesant. Does the work "cock" still apply? I thought that was used more for chickens.

no. theres hen phesants (female) and cock phesants (male)

i knew my years of upland bird hunting would come into play sometime

^^Yeah, he's right. I hunt pheasant myself though this was the first of the chinese species I have seen up close. Used to the ring neck's the state provides here.
