View Full Version : 4 to 5 lug wheel adapters?

I know some people have asked about 4 to 5-lug conversions because of a certain wheel they want that's only available in a 5-lug pattern. I don't know if anyone has considered this option but I stumbled across it today.
Here's an example on a MINI:

Here's a place that sells them made to order:

Some patterns may not be possible, I'm not sure. And you'd have to rethink what wheels you can get based on how the offset is affected so that may be a limiting factor as well. But those BBS wheels on that MINI sure do look nice. ;)
EDIT:
Just keep in mind that the more you complicate your modifications, the more potential for error is associated. So shop for wheels that will fit your car without using special adapters first. Just my 2 cents.

That's generally the first idea that pops into people's heads. But Jay did a lookup on the parts involved in doing it and it was a very pricey procedure (don't remember the cost). If you went through a junkyard it may not be too bad.
I just don't remember anyone discussing this option -- not that I'm looking at a 5-lug wheel, but somebody might some day.

My main concern is are they safe?
If they are, I am sure you can find some to fit because I am quite sure the stock Mini wheels fit the Elantra and vice versa. So they may use the same adapter. The only thing to worry about after that like you guys said is the damn width. The Mini has a lot of wheel well space for bigger wheels unlike the Elantra. One of the Mini salesman at my job has 20 inch TIS wheels on his Mini and the rims are 4 lug. TIS stans for Twenty Inches Strong. They are the company that put the size of the rim on the center cap. His Mini looks exactly like this one, but it's black and has no body kit:

Well I can't vouch for them or anything. But I would think they'd be safe.
As for the Mini being the same... it isn't. They have a 4x100 bolt pattern. The XD is 4x114.3.

I wouldm't think they would be safe, or at least not as safe as keeping the stock wheel pattern or a complete swap.
Throwing that asside, 1" is the thinest you can get these.
1" = 25.4mm
I have a 17x7 wheel with a +42 offset and they come out to the fenders.
In order for me to fit the same size wheel, I would need to find a +67 offset wheel.
That isn't going to happen.
Now, to address the argument about maybe a 16x6 wheel would work before it starts.
Well, let me start by saying I don't want to give up a full inch of tire width but if I did, you have to take in consideration that even though the wheel is a full inch more narrow, that is only 1/2 an inch from each side. This means you would need to find a 16x6 with a +55 offset. Again not going to happen (atleast not easily and with much wheel choices).
The last would be going to a 15x5...why in Gods name anyone would want to, this would allow you to keep the same offset of +42.
That being said, no it wouldn't be as safe and more importantly, it wouldn't work unless you went with a wide body kit and trimmed out the excess fender well.

If you modified the fender wells, with flares, then this should be easy. I have 25mm wheel spacers, and i tried them on my car. Whoa was that wide. With 225 tires, the tire stuck out of the side of the car by 1/2 inch. Im thinking that was going to rub. They are pretty safe though since each one is made with the correct hub size so no hubcentric spacers are needed.

Autobot, I mentioned earlier that it would throw off the offset. So you have to reconsider what wheels would work. Obviously they compensated for it with that MINI by choosing a BBS wheel with a very large offset.
Ultimately though, you're right. There's nothing better than a wheel that simply fits without modification.

Good looking out Steve. If I ever decided to spend a lot of money on a project concerning wheels and fender flares this would be perfect.
