View Full Version : My newest toy...
A Alpine Developments paperweight. On my way to work this morning I went to accelerate to pass a vehicle when all of a sudden *BOOM* massive backfire which in turn causes my vehicle to shudder and bog hellishly. Then little to no power.I turn around to come home and some power came back but it felt very stockish.Oh thats right, because my turbo no longer spools up.Yea,another goddamn Alpine failure. It has been almost a year so I guess I should have seen it coming. All I know is now my car will no longer be boosted. Not now,not ever again. Now what could have caused this? Maybe another uni-chip failure? I will now have to have my car towed to work so I can dismantle the kit and see what else may have been destroyed. My car will not even idle at this point.

oh jesus. we are running the same kit i think.
let hope its something simple like the wheel shattered from too much compressor surge.

I get backfires all the time...oh god
Haha dont run it too hard there buddy,it'll blow.I was in pure denial until it happened to mine.I thought maybe since I had no problems with my kit other than self inflicted ones, mine would be alright.WRONG!!Oh well, sheet happens for a reason I guess.
Im waiting for Felix to see this thread. Now we both share a common hatred for their crappy products

did your boost spike when this boom occured?
Nope not at all.I didn't even get completely into it either.I forgot to mention it wasn't an exhaust backfire either.......right thru the intake.Thats a helpful piece of knowledge too ;)
The cel had come on but the battery in my scan tool was fricking dead so I will scan it tomorrow night.Im still like "WTF" lol

Like I said I get backfires but I never throw a CEL, I am running rich when it happens too. I looked at the compressor inlet blades today as well and they were still in perfect condition.
Good luck with the investigating bro!
Let me go take a look around and see if anything looks out of place

wow this is really funny because my 13G blew like 4 days ago haha. My situation was very similar, I went to accelerate hard and all of the sudden BOOM! lost all power immediately and there was this strange "whapping" sound. luckily i was literally 5 seconds away from home so I was able to pull right into my garage and shut it off.
I haven;t had much time to diagnose or dismantle much but I did take a look at the compressor wheel and its completely ****ed. lol

I was not able to make more than 3psi after it happened to me, I need to run a boost controller now to make power. Today I blew the coupler that attaches the charge pipe to the compressor...we have some **** luck fellas.

yup upgrade to those heavy duty ones. You're not allowed to blow your car up until after next march when Captiol opens back up. I wanna run you.

I was blowing pipes all the time, especially at the track the first night....that was scary! Good thing it was just a pipe though, makes one hell of a bang doesnt it! Try blowing off your blow off valve, that bangs around all over the place!

yep, the grub screws came loose. It was my last run of the night and as I went pack by the staging lanes buddy was like come in and do one more pass before we shut down. So I went alone. At the very end of the 1/4 I blew the BOV off, I was like ok thats karma coming to get me now.

Yeah my charge pipes blow off all the time, I've finally tightened them all down enough to where they've been holding 20psi. The main problem is around the MAF sensor because since its plastic you don't want to tighten it too much, and that was the main place they were blowing off. I want to do something like this (sorry for picture quality):

Would be even cooler if you could take the MAF appart like on the subaru's and mount it in the charge pipe like this:

my charge piping has never popped off and I've peaked at 14psi before?
maybe its because i cranked down on them so hard that I snapped a few clamps. and the kit's charge piping is rolled on the ends?

Put some Gorilla Glue on the MAF sensor and it will NEVER pop off. ;-)
Oh, and as long as you perform regular maint on your car the TD04-13g will last forever. Mitsu turbos are the most reliable out there. My beater Subie has a 13g on it and has over 250,000 miles on it. Yes its the original turbo, and never been rebuilt.
