I got my first official speeding ticket today. I was running late for work but I didn't drive fast to get there sooner. < I always figured if I'm late its not worth getting a ticket for it> but I was coasting in 3rd gear and the speedo on my 280z sticks cause of the tranny/engine swap and I just left it in 3rd keeping with the car in front of me and i was stopped. 35 in a 25. speedo is off by about 10% so i compensate by letting the car coast w/o gas. so now i have to pay a $105 ticket and i get 2 points. I got a ticket in 05 for speeding on the highway cause I fell asleep driving which the cop probably saved me from crashing but it was changed to an equipment violation cause my insurance and car note was so high i couldn't afford it. Anyone know how I can keep the points off now though. it will be the first 2 pts on my license and my insurance is low $63 month (30yr old car) but I don't want it to go up especially when I get another elantra. but will 2 pts really cause my rates to go up? Its the first moving violation i've had since i've been driving.

and of course I got hassled by the cop a little, had me put both hands on the wheel, take my hat off w/ my left hand, asked me why my seatbelt was off<which he saw me take off to get my wallet>, take the ticket w/ my right hand and sign it with my other hand still on the wheel. I've never had to do all that before. do I look that dangerous?

I woulda never gotten it if I still had the XD!!!!!!....or if I didn't have an engine swap

We have definsive driving and if you take the class it will keep the points off your record but you can do that once every two years.

You had a DWB (driving while black) that is why he had you do all that.

Great attitude. . . I can see you going far in life  I bet you'll be the first one screaming if someone stole your car or broke into your house.

To the OP, sucks to get a ticket, just be sure to go the speed limit and that will be averted in the future

Each state is different, but in Indiana most counties have a pre-trial diversion program. Pay the ticket and an additional fee and if you don't get another ticket in a given time period (6 months to 2 years) the ticket is never reported to the insurance companies. I don't know if they have that where you are.

What????

Come on, if you speed it's your fault, not the cops one ... he's doing his job and you can understand when one decides to be uber carefull, you can't imagine how much crap those guys are taking each and every day!

I always say : if you deserved it, pay and be carefull! (and that's is what I do ... well I try at least! And believe me I had LOTS of tickets in my life.)

I have 9 points on my license. Thats down from 13 points 2 years ago. I got a DUI and from that i got 11 points altogether and Lost my driving privleges for 4 years. After i got them back i got a speeding ticket that day. That put me into the hazardous driver category so i had to take a safe drivers course and retake my drivers test. Long story short i have learned my lesson. I never get behind the wheel if i have had even one drink. And I don't speed, I am more cautious of my driving habits now than ever. If i get another speeding ticket. It will put my points back over the hazardous driver's level again and i have to go do it all over. F*** that!!!!!!!!! Better safe than sorry.
Plus I have kids now:D

o, i didn't say the cops suck because of my ticket, i still am not fond of the police but I was going too fast. he coulda let me off but i was wearing my seatbelt and my license and insurance was all together so i can't just be "let off" without some sort of fine. I NEVER speed on the roads. I usually just coast on the roads while people pass me by. People incl. police saw my elantra and now the 280z and think i drive like crazy but Im uber safe behind the wheel. Almost anyone that rides with me think I drive too slow so I know it won't happen again. I just never felt the need to speed, i think it was hyunelan that posted a LOOOOONG time ago about the calculation of going above the speedlimit to a destination will only decrease the travel time by a few minutes or even seconds so its not worth it.

I searched on the pts situation and driver class is only for people with 5pts or more. :( I'll have 2pts for 3 years.
Also forgot to mention this was in a suburb of Cleveland, and when the officer was talking to me some suck *** old man stopped his car next to the officer and was like "Good morning officer!, glad to see you protecting the city".....wtf! I was about to flip on that old guy and ask the officer if he is impeding the flow of traffic but i figured that'd give him a reason to make me put my hands on the hood.

thats how it is in MD. It goes off your record in 2 years and comes off your insurance in 3 years.

im not even sure if it matters though because I don't think I get the clean record discount because that guy crashed into my car so my record isn't clean according to the insurance company.

Nope i walked, skated or rode my bike everywhere. I'm not the worst driver in Pa. I just acted dumb and got behind the wheel my B.A.C. was a .38 (that's almost legally dead) I had just turned 21 thought i ruled the world. Found out I didn't. Spent some time in jail and it cost me almost $12,000 in fines, damages and restitution. I'm a better person now and I have been drug free for 4 years ago last week. Alot of good things have happened since then and it's been a long hard road out of hell. So i'm not looking back i'm focused on here and now. One day at a time.

Yeah, I can't help much on this subject, how old are you now? I think that might be a pretty big factor in how bad they adjust the rates (fair or unfair as it is).

Dave, just for the record, you are extra scary and dangerous. The first time I met you I thought you were going to pull out a glock on me and wave it in my face.

cornbread: if it isn't too late, go to court. they'll take it down to a guilty plea to equipment failure ($75 fine, no points) if you tell them you were going the same speed as everyone else, but your speedo sticks and give them proof that you're going to fix it.

cornbread, I dont know what you look like, or how you dress (so this may not apply) but I think alot of guys want to dress like thugs, but get upset when they get stereotyped by cops or whoever else. unfortunately, it comes with the territory.

I'm pretty much a standard white guy, and have never been hassled by the cops.

my white friend on the other hand, has a shaved head, and wears thug clothing, and gets hassled about 50% of the times he's been pulled over.

I think there's a fairly strong correlation between the impression you give off and how you're treated, probably moreso than race.

This is true. A person who appears similar to a thug in dress or mannerisms will be automatically be treated a bit harsher because a cop has to assume very quickly what kind of behavior a suspect will have without seeing them or talking to them.

A friend of mine now dresses in a normal fashion, well fitting clothes and clean cut. No off the wall ear rings or body piercings. If he is stopped, he is not treated as a thug by how he presents himself (clothing/appearance). On the other hand, his older brother who dresses in baggy clothing and behaves similarly as a gang banger, will be treated harsher because he appears at first glance to be a thug.

Same goes for the car you drive. If it is a normal car that is older, but is beat up, defective equipment is often the trigger for the stop. Dents are warning signs.

On a modded car, clean, sensible mods won't get you noticed, but mods that make the car look like a racer, will get you noticed. Big *** wings, lowered (too much from stock) vehicles, real loud exhausts, a loud BOV and excessively loud audio equipment will get you more trouble. Many cops have to determine if the mods make the car unsafe, especially suspension mods or agressive camber/wheel offset settings.

In ND, only tickets that are 3 point or above are displayed for the insurance companies.....and you lose 1/2 point every 3rd month.

actually i was wearing the orange home depot logo hat. he pulled me over on the street before the plaza entrance and asked me where i was going at 7am....oh and I think he was gonna let me go w/ a warning but he read the record wrong on my file and told me as he handed me the ticket my license was suspended in 2003, and there was an equip. violation in 2005. I was like " my license was never suspended"..so he went back to the car and said "O i read it wrong, it was a cancelation, so you must have gotten a new ID"..."yeah when i got my driver's license to replace my state ID" :( can't get a break

thats pretty ****ty of him....I got pulled over early in the morning (6:30am) and my passenger and I were wearing all black...which would be a pretty strong indicator that we were stealing stuff in the night....

but I didnt get so much as a question as to why we were dressed in all black... he probably would have freaked if he'd searched the car.

my dad's company is in a rough part of town, and was getting broken into repeatedly overnight.

he hired my friend and I to do night time security, and wanted us to be prepared for anything that might happen.

we were headed back to the house when I rolled through a stop sign.

all our security stuff was in the car.

in short, yes (at least in Texas) we were on private fenced in property, authorized by the land owner to be there, and the guns were properly prepared for transport. they probably would have detained us for having all of that stuff until our story and backgrounds checked out though.:threadjac

You could always challenge the ticket and if you can't beat it try to get it lowered or changed like the guys above me suggested. Remember, put off the court date as long as possible. It's best if the cop can't remember you or can't remember details.
