Seems more like "saved" than "doomed"...

SUVs...and fuel efficiency...in the same sentence. Doesn't seem natural. Still, at the rate GM's going this will never make it to market before they collapse as a company.

The pure fact that an SUV hybrid is the Greenest Car despite that it doesn't get as good mileage as other vehicles. Just more hype to make hybrids look good, AND keep dumb Americans into the SUV craze.

ok, as good as it may appear to SUV drivers. 21mpg is not that great. Sure it can haul the whole Brady Bunch, but they'll still only get to the corner before a fill up is needed.

My 91 Buick LeSabre got 20-21mpg mixed (real world and 15 years down the road)

Or he could have meant that its a 5,000lbs+ monster, and that if that thing tanks you in anything smaller then a 5,000lbs+ monster, your dead.

And the fact that it's "green", and "enviro-friendly" (which its neither, but the general public has an IQ of 15, and will buy any of that ****), there's going to be thousands of them out there, and a few of us.

Untill soccer mom/dad loses control while eating a McDonald's meal, talking on the cell phone, and reading something.

What I don't get. . . . our Crew Cab 4.8L V8 gets 22+mpg on the highway with multiple tanks in excess of 24mpg. . . how is this so "great"?

If you are using "21mpg" and "fuel efficient" in the same sentence....yes, you are doomed.

Because weight makes a difference. All those heavy batteries and the added weight of the back cabin portion. Another case where i'd approve a truck and ban an suv. Truck has less weight tied into it, even with an ARE topper. You could put more in the truck, and get just as good mileage, all for less money.

I believe that American engineering just can't compare with the rest of the worlds market. I mean do they put any thought into it. My first car was a 1999 Ford Ranger, it was a 2.5 I4 and I only averaged between 18-20 mpg. I apologize I am very anti-American cars, have had lots of bad luck with them.

How much "bad luck" can you hae when you didn't even start until 1999? seriously?

GM has been making more economical cars with more power than anybody else for DECADES. Look at the 3.8L V6 they've been using since 1985 in the mid-size FWD's. I have a current customer with 3, the "newest" is a 94 with 207k miles on it, and he averages 30mpg on his sales route. My folks and I rented a LeSabre back in 96 and on a quick 3 day trip to FL and back AVERAGED 32mpg.

how about thier trucks? I've had 3 of my own, 9 IN THE FAMILY. Dad has the current "gas guzzler" gets 19mpg average for them. All 3 of mine have been 22mpg+ (my 93 was a 25mpg truck). Toyota's V6 Tundra cannot get anywhere CLOSE to that. The best average was 16mpg on the highway with that. The Ridgeline? IF you even call it a "truck" it's LUCKY to get 19mpg, and add anything in the bed or towing and it drops to 15/16. The Titan? 15 is a GOOD day.

So don't tell me how "terrible" the domestics are. Honduh can't get over 20 in the mdx/pilot, but GM can out of a Tahoe. Toyoduh's fulls size suv is a hog.

I never said my bad luck was with gas mileage.

Then we want to talk about longevity and durability? 200k on my caprice, dad sold his with 280k, my 93 truck was at 180k when I traded it in, the 89 I got rid of last year was at 224k, our current parts truck just passed 190k. . . then there's all those 3.8 W-body gm's out there pushing 300k. . .

Let's keep this discussion based around the Hybrid applications in SUVs please.

Actually this thread is about the Tahoe Hybrid. My post started with "I believe...", this was an opinion. If you want to start making fun of me then open a new thread about how you hate Deviant for his opinions and his misfortunes with domestic automobiles.

All due respect Bob, you and your family probably maintain your vehicles very well. Any vehicle can last if it's taken care of. I've found that imports in general can be neglected by owner after owner and still keep going.

As far as the hybrid tahoe... whoop-ed-ee dooo! Put a diesel in it... same mileage.

Diesel trucks/tahoes/burbans will be here this year as well. GM is offering it's first light duty diesel since 1998 with a new 4.5L Diesel.

I think more importantly people should purchase the vehicle that fits their needs. The Imports have gotten people into "there's only one option" mode of thinking, whereas the tahoe/burban/trucks from the domestics offer infinite choices ranging from rear end ratios, engine sizes, power output, trans options, 4wd/2wd, configurations of bed length/cab style/ GVWR's. . . . you could literallt build a 100 different vehicles from the options and no 2 would be the same.

True, but i still think a truck is a better choice over an SUV.

And a diesel Tahoe should get better mpg than that hybrid, due to less weight from no batteries.
However, Americans really need to get over this escalation issue. Trucks also need to be held to the same safety standards as cars, ie same height bumpers. Thats whats really killing people.

battery weight is not likely to play a significant role in fuel economy of a vehicle that large.

That car is just for the Hybrid hype ... they say 30% better fuel efficiency but I'm sure it's a lots less.

21mpg? ... green car my ***!
