Yeah, but he has a 00; it's in a different spot. I found this on WebTech:

The chime connector is marked M33 in that sketch. It's hard to tell whether you can get to it from underneath or if you have to remove the dash panel. This has come up before; next time I see a J2 in a salvage yard, I might have take some pics.

thank god for being able to disconnect it. my friends and i love to just chill after school, and since all their speakers suck balls, we always use my car for music, and i more often than not keep my doors open to get most of the sound outside of the car. the chime was a killer :)

i just unplugged mine and i have a 00 elantra.... take the little panel off from underneath the steering wheel and then take off that metal piece and then lay on the floor and look up and to make it easy to find put your key in the ignition and while your laying on the floor look straight up and you will see a goldish color box and you will be able to see the little cymbal like things chiming and you will see the connector that is hooked up to it just disconnect it and your done...
send me a pm if you have any questions

Any chance of a picture so we can update the DIY to include J2 Elantras?

Man, if ours would have involved all that, mine would probably still be chiming away. Ahhh laziness.

If you looking just for the chime that sounds to remind you that your key is in ignition when you open the door, you can do it the easy way of removing the key sensor instead of the chime itself, I believe it is the same chime as the seat belt one.

The key in ignition sensor is right above the play where you insert your key. Remove the covers behind the steering wheel (just the top one), it justs pops out, and you see something sticking out on top of the "barrel" where you insert your key, unscrew that and it will not detect a key in ignition anymore.
