Well... just about 30 Mins after posting the Thread: Snow,Ice=more dents, i went to go out side to take pictures of my house with all the lights,(Christmas lights, I went big this year) and i Fell ( YES IT IS ICY OUT SIDE LOL ) with the camera while it was on, and long story short, it turns on, but thats it, the focus thing, well is jammed, and does not move. It is old anyways. 5.2MP, HP Photosmart M415.

Have any camera suggestions? under $200, MP'S is not really a big Concern because i always had this camera on 3MP.

THanks!

The Canon A-series is really good. My brother has the A610 and I have the A710 IS. The A610 is nice because it has such good battery life with 4 AA's, and a swivel screen which comes in handy. The best thing about the A710 IS is the image stabilization which helps when taking indoor shots w/o a flash, and it helps a lot when shooting video. Actually since it shoots 640x480 at 30fps and has image stabilization, the video from my camera comes out looking very good.

Anyway, they both take good photos for point & shoot cameras. And there's even a hack out there you can use with these to enable shooting in RAW mode. ;)

Cannon powershot's are the best. My parents are getting the A750...the one with the 3inch screen. The reviews on it are great, I gave it a test today at a local electronics store and it's awesome. Turns on in a blast, picture quality is just amazing. Very easy to work with, and is rather compact. $229 is a great price. You'd probably find it cheaper than that.

I can't say good enough things about our Nikon. Falling off of a moving vehicle in excess of 60mph, sitting in the rain overnight and it still worked. Takes amazing pictures and good videos.

Only one thing to make sure you get... a camera made by Canon.

If for some reason you choose another, make it be from a "Camera company" not a "computer company" as the lenses are so much better.

I love the Canon SD series (digital elph) because it is so small and compact, you can easily put it in your pocket and not worry about lugging around a big, bulky camera.

For point and shoot, I'd look at Nikon or Canon. Both make excellent camera's throughout price ranges.

And the lens mechinism is jammed? This may sound crazy but it worked when I did the same thing with my mom's Canon. When your turning it on, LIGHTLY push on the lens ring AWAY from where its jammed.

(I work at National Camera Exchange, and have degrees in photography so I know a little about this...if I can't contribute any Hyundai Knowledge at least I can do this...)
Anyway, I've personally had 2 different Canon "A-series" digitals, and Nikon Coolpix cameras in the past, and gotten to play with pretty much everything else at the store. ANyway, I just got a Sony Cyber-shot W55 and I absolutely love it! IT has almost NO shutter lag (the time between pushing the button and it actually takes the picture) The Canons were really really slow, the Nikon was a little better, but the SOny seems to have NO lag. It focusses faster than the other cameras I had, and it seems to work in low light way better. (The Nikon sucked in anything other than outside in sunlight). I got a pink one because it cost almost $50 less than the "cool" colors, but they probably won't have deals like that. Get yours at
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/477373-REG/Sony_DSCW55_Cybershot_DSC_W55_Digital_Camera.html As far as pixel count, my first Canon is 1.9MP and the 4X6 pix don't look any different than the 7MP's my Sony makes. As long as you stay under 8X10 it just doesn't matter how many pixels your camera does.
hope this helps.
Oh yeah, they just don't repair digital cameras now, it costs more to replace any part on the camera than it costs to just replace the whole thing.

^ About the A-series Canon cameras you had, which models were they? I just wonder if you had the older versions with the original DIGIC processor, or with DIGIC II. DIGIC II is a lot faster at doing just about everything from camera start-up, auto-focusing, to response time and its ability to take rapid consecutive pictures. The cameras I mentioned both have the DIGIC II processor. And now there are several in the A-series with the faster still DIGIC III processor.

I was wondering something similar. . . our Nikon 7600 is quick and takes excellent indoor shots.

For point and shoot cameras, there are many very good brands. Nikon and Canon have very loyal following, think Ford vs. Chevy debates, except with good products. Sony and Fuji also make good P&S cameras, but I wouldn't recommend either for a DSLR.

If you want some good advice check out www.dpreview.com. Unbiased reviews of cameras and a nice search feature where you can put in your price range and features you have to have.

Be aware of on-line sites with deals that seem to good to be true, they are often grey market or will suddenly not have that model in stock, but have a much more expensive model, or will want to sell you a bunch of overpriced accessories before the camera ships.

Man... if I used quotes for my signature this would be it:

My friend got his Nikon D40 DSLR.

Damn is it slick, but I'm a Canon fan when it comes to P&S.

I haven't owned any Canon's, but I don't find them very friendly for reviewing and deleting pics

Well went down to the local bestbuy, and bought a Canon Power Shot SD1000 7.1 MP. total $205 (have best buy reward credit. so got 10$ off) This camera is 100 times better then the 5.2 MP HP. the video is great, nice and clear, the pictures... are perfect!. could not be happier.

That would be the camera that I would buy if shopping today. I bought my SD600 (6mp) after last Christmas when it was on clearance/closeout. I've loved it ever since. The new SD1000 has some nice advancements over my SD600 too. At 7.1MP, you can turn the image quality down to 1/2, and increase your storage space dramatically, without hindering image quality too much.

Or just get a huge SD card. That's what I did. My 2GB Patriot card can hold about 650 images at 6.0MP. Just make sure you get a good card. A crappy SD card can make the whole camera suck. If the card is slow, it will store pictures slowly and make the time between shots pretty-long.

Glad to hear you got a Canon. I don't care what anyone says, Canon is the best company out there. Look at real professional photographers and I can guarentee that over 95% use Canon. There is a reason behind that quality.

I'm pretty sure they were the old ones. I didn't see much of an improvement between the 2, and the first one was from 2001. After playing with the newer Canons I just liked the Sony the best. And I'd agree with Canon DSLRs being great, if I didn't already have 7 Nikon lenses I'd have a Canon too.
