Hey,

I wasn't able to find many shop manuals for my 02 Elantra GT, I had a Haynes Manual for my old Taurus and it worked well for me, they make this manual as well:

Hyundai Elantra 1996 - 2001 (http://www.haynes.com/products/searchType/vehicleApplicationSearch2/searchEnd/yes/sfID1//sfID2//sfID3//year/2001/make/Hyundai/model/Elantra/x/11/y/7/productID/205)

I know the XD began in 2001, so I would assume this manual will work for me, but I was surprised to see that it dated all the way back to 1996 models. Are the second and third generation Elantra's very similar?

I was wondering if anyone has this manual, and if it also contains supplementary information covering the differences between the base model and GT (kind of like how the Taurus manual covered the sedan AND wagon). I ask because I was unable to find the manual at a local shop to take a look, so I will need to buy it online.

Either way, unless someone out there knows of a better manual for my car, I'm going purchase this one.

Thanks,

sYnth

Don't buy that one. You need one for the 2001+ models.

Buy the OEM one from these guys.

If it's not listed just email them and they can probably get it for you.

Or you can check out the http://www.hmaservice.com/ site for info.

Thanks for the reply.

One of the things I like about the Haynes Manual is that it explains things so that a lowly garage mechanic like me can understand. Will these shop manuals go over my head, or will I be able to follow them? I'm no certified mechanic, but I know how to use a wrench. :)

Thanks,

As James said, if you had a J2 it would've being ok. I have it and I can assure you it's based on the J2 only, the XD is barely represented in that book.

If you don't have money for the shop book stick with HMA Service.

Well, I've never taken a look at a Haynes manual so I'm not sure how they compare. Here are some pictures from the OEM one. If you want to read the text Right Click > View Image and you'll see the image without it being smaller.

I don't understand why people still buy shop manuals when the information is available for FREE from hmaservice.com. If you have that much extra cash, send some my way.

I bought mine for when I'm not near a computer and need some quick information. Until I have the internet in my head, I guess I'll have to keep buying the books.

Also, don't forget that hmaservice.com is being replaced by HyundaiTechInfo.com (http://www.hyundaitechinfo.com). They basically have the same info, but Hyundai Tech Info is easier to navigate. Tech Info is basically in Beta testing though, so some of the links are wonky and some of the data doesn't load right all the time.

Well, I've never taken a look at a Haynes manual so I'm not sure how they compare.

Haynes manuals have pictures instead of diagrams, sometimes it's a lot more easier, sometimes not ... in the end Haynes is way more "general" (read "evasive") then HMA can be, they often don't have step by step instruction on part removal or are missing informations on removal procedures ... I have the Haynes manual and I barely use it, I prefer HMA and my printer! :D

Wow, SuperGLS, I really appreciate you going through the trouble of taking those pics - and I'm glad that I posted this query, because the Haynes manual clearly wouldn't have been what I'm looking for. Pictures are nice, but a good diagram tells you everything you need to know, and nothing more. As Einstein said: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."

I've signed up for http://www.hmaservice.com, but I haven't received an email from them yet.

While I agree that the internet is a great free resource, and I think it's great that Hyundai provides this information for its customers, when you're under your car, covered in sh*t, you don't want to have to go to your computer for the information you need. For those that are strapped for ca$h, printing sounds like a good option, but I prefer to have a complete reference that I can have with me when I'm on the road as well.

Again, thanks so much for your advice.

I assume this is the correct manual for the XD: Elantra Manual (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-Hyundai-Elantra-Original-Shop-Manual-01_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6762QQihZ007QQitemZ1 70152387024QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

Thanks,

sYnth

If there isn't a GT specific one (I'm not sure, but I haven't seen one), I can sell you a 2002 Elantra one. PM me if interested.

I've signed up for http://www.hmaservice.com, but I haven't received an email from them yet.

If you don't get the email immediately, go back in to the site and click the Forgot Password link. It'll ask you for your email address (again), then send the password immediately.

For some reason the password is not sent a lot of the time until you do the Forgot Password thing.

I started a common one for DFWHyundais.com, but for some reason Paki asked me to take it down. I'm not sure if I could remember it now.

The manual is good because my pc isn't located in my garage. I can undertsand the need for one b/c no one wants to run back and forth from car to pc. Nor do I want to print out massive amounts of pages. I haven't gotten one yet, but was thinking about it.

Anbody else noticed that the new HMA service (webtech) does not have any shop info for the 2001,2002, and 2003 elantras? What the hell...the info was there under the old system. Anyone know if they plan to bring the info back?
