The reason I ask is because I bought a lot of 10 Hyundai OEM oil filters and they have both Kia and Hyundai on them.
What gives?

Yes.
And as we move further into the future Hyundais and Kias are going to share more and more parts as well as platforms. It's a good thing.

ya minus the genesis hyundai is making thier cars more luxurious and kia is now going to be thier sporty cars...im guessing with the genesis since they are doing 2dr and 4dr they are aiming to compete with the g35.

1998- almost 10 years ago! Virtually all Hyundais and Kias share a lot of equipment:
Rio = Accent
Spectra = Elantra
Optima = Sonata
Sportage = Tucson
etc.
They are as closely related as, say, GM sister divisions at this point.
The happy result of all this is that there is some cross-platform commonality... the Kia Spectra front strut bar more or less fits in the Elantra, the Tiburon rear sway bar fits both the Elantra and Spectra. Both the Elantra and Spectra have the same 2.0 L Beta II engine, etc.

You know, I never noticed that. But now that you mention it, I see the similarities!

There are one or two people who post here that have Spectras. The fuse boxes are different, but just about everything else is the same (or very similar).

The Sorento is the one oddball. It's a Kia-only platform, but it uses the Hyundai drivetrains. I wouldn't mind one of those body on frame SUV's with a true transfer case and the 3.8L V6.

Is there a Kia counterpart to the Santa Fe?

Ford also owns a large chunk of KIA as well. Hyundai Mitsubishi and Chysler have a joint World Engine company for developing new engines together. I think a 2.4 engine is already out (Calibre has it). KIA would also share in the engines I guess.
