Although there is a DIY (http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/hvac.php) for this already, I decided to do differently. I already tried the method Ilanpro introduced, but it seemed that the light was not even and my LEDs are not bright enough. So I chose to use "direct" method.

I detached the reflector and attached LEDs directly to the panel.

I'll paint the point that Hyundai missed. (A/C button never illuminates...)

.... creating the circuit

This is how it works. Because the LEDs are a bit too bright now, I may need to add a resister for the balance with the clock and gauges. (or tint HVAC? )

I'm still working on it. I think I did only about 20%.

Any comments are welcomed. ;)

This is still incomplete, and I don't think I'll finish it this weekend; I'm just too lazy.. :)

You can see better pictures (1600x1200) at

For 2004, I guess you can do this, too. But I've never opened 04 HVAC, so I can't sure.

I had 3 separate circuits to mine (although I kept the diffuser). One circuit behind each dial, with the middle dial sharing the AC/recirc/defrost buttons. That is the only circuit currently working. The other two have an issue - probably because the LEDs are in series, and if one goes, they all go.

I am going to fix mine (someday - noone hold their breath) by simply gluing some LED 194 matrix bulbs to the back. Should be simpler than all the separate LEDs, + have the effect of a normal light bulb as long as I put them in the right place:

I have a spare, unmolested HVAC, I should just mod that one up so I can swap them out... that would be easier than waiting for a day that I feel like taking mine out, fixing it, and putting it back in.

hmm... seeing this makes me wanna get a spare hvac and have a go at something like this myself... hmmm

Instead of trying to lower the light levels by playing with voltage/current levels, I notice you've installed a lot of LEDs. Why not just remove a few? Shouldn't that reduce the intensity sufficiently?

If you're worried about coverage, I'd guess it'd not be too hard to arrange a reflector that works well enough.

^^ Too few would create hotspots (not to be an *** but I see spots in the red part :(

my question is, how are you going to see the road past all that light in the car!?

Apart from the brightness, nice job. Keep up the good work.
