well, i had 2 qts for the guys doing my engine swap. they told me they didnt need to use it (wtf?). so over the last couple weeks (mind you, had the car back 2+ months), i start hearing a ticking from my tranny.
tonight i get to my dads, drain it out, even jacked up the passenger side to get as much out as possible, and refilled it. how much came out of the tranny you ask? .7 quarts, as measured by hyundais gear oil bottle. tranny needs 2.2 or 2.3. i cant remember exactly.
get everything back together, no more ticking. also, while under the car, i find out that one of the nuts on the exhaust holding the midpipe to the manifold is not there...had to jimmy rig up a spacer and a nut that would only go 1/2 way down the bolt.
the best part is i realize that one of the bolts holding the motor mount to the front of the sub frame isnt there. not loose, just gone. luckily, i had 3 bags o' bolts, and found one that fit. go for a drive after all this, my engine/tranny doesnt shake anymore coming from a dead stop, no more clicking, and i dont hear the exhaust rattle
but im still grinding going 2-1 at any speed, over about 5mph and the rpms at anything but idle speed. :(

I not sure if you know this buy you shouldn't down shift from 2nd to 1st if the car is moving. I know once you get the feel of the car that you can do it when it is moving. Just giving you a heads up if you didn't know.
Yea, I don't downshift from 2nd to 1st cause of the lockout...

wait... what? is this an elantra only thing? cuz i used to always down shift into 1st while driving my old 1992 excel... at the appropriate speed of course...

i did it in my old XD all the time, and never had a problem. didnt have a problem with this one until after the engine swap was done
Unless I'm moving at 10-5 mph, which is where the lockout starts, it won't let me drop it down at all.
So I down shift through all the gears, till I'm in second and then just brake.

Being low on oil in a standard transmission isn't that serious , the gears will splash it around and keep everything well lubricated. Sounds like the guy working on the car is pretty careless , not someone you would want to change your timing belt or other critical work. Down shifting into first on most standards from my experience isn't a good idea. Brakes are much cheaper than clutches anyway.

I have no idea wat this "lockout" you ppl keep talkin about is, I downshift to first at least once a week and have never had any problems, you just have to rev match.........I have no idea what kind of idiot would downshift and not rev match......just asking to break something.
Brakes are much cheaper than clutches anyway.

I know it can be done. I tried a couple different times on a couple different courses, one of which was a tight 180* turn. Only problem was it led to massive wheel spin. So I didn't do it anymore.

Yep, this is true.
When Travis and I first put MT-90 in my car, the transmission was dry. By dry, I mean nothing came out when we pulled the drain plug. I'm sure there was still some in there, though.
It seems the last time my clutch was changed, the fluid was not replaced. I drove it for about 8 months like that, and once the MT-90 was in, it was still smooth as silk.

Sounds like a toasted syncro... I've toasted several transaxles, and trust me, they're not as impervious to abuse and lack of maintenance as a RWD standard gearbox. syncros are made from brass or teflon, and when the oil goes, the first softest surface that rides against anything else is next.
Only thing to do is change the oil, make sure its EXACTLY what the book says you need, nothing else. we had a similar problem on my buddy's beta LC with XD tranny, and his original LC's tranny when we used the "compatible" oil... lucas was another good one when added as per directions.
I once had an old celica that shifted like **** in the first couple gears, and could not shift into 1st from 2nd unless i was sitting completely still.
I changed the unrecognizeable liquid that came from the transaxle and filled it up with fresh 75w90, and about 8 ounces of lucas and it was good to go.... worked perfectly.

Redline gear oil did a good job smoothing out my old Elantra's transmission. Eliminated a 4-5 grind when shifting quickly.

I have an auto....so I have none of these problems, but mine is starting to clunk out of gear every so often, mainly out of 2nd and out of 3rd. Had the tranny fluid changed about 10,000 miles ago. Seems to mainly do it going 20-25 and 30-40 miles per hour depending on the rpms. IT doesn't rev high or idle wierd when this is happening.
It's just wierd b/c I can't tell is its trying to shift and failing or if it did finally shift. It does go through all the gears w/o hang time. I dunno, its hard to explain
When my trucks auto tranny went, the rpms hung so I'm confused as to if this is going to be something major or not. My warratny is over in 2,000 miles and I dunno go to the dealer just so they can charge me and give me the old, "when we drove it, nothing was wrong."
Sorry for the hijack, but while were talking about trannys.
