Well, i haven't been on Here in quite awhile, but I did get the chance to meet a few of ya back at HITH ....

Remember The primer grey beta swapped accent ... ?

I was just the passenger.

Anyways...

My girlfriend has a 95 taurus and its having some mysterious vaporlocking problem with only 73k on the clock. Screw ford, the taurus is a crapper.

I suggested she look into getting a used elantra, because I think anything powered by a beta is worth buying. Great engine.

We found a 2002 GLS Elantra for about 6g's out the door.

Its gold with a matching Interior. 77,000 miles, fresh oil change blah blah.

im under the impression that that model could be had with the CVVT ? but this one appears to be the non CVVT model, a plus in my book. one less thing to go wrong.

needed a good detail job, and that was about it.

Need some opinions here. Points of concern are the waterpump and/or timing belt.

How many miles of reliability have some of you folks had with your cars ?

How well could the car hold up past the 100k mark ?

Look forward to hearing some good stuff here....

i would check to see if it has had the 60k service done or not.

The 60K service includes timing belt and water pump. If it hasn't been done, you need to immediately.

To answer some more of your questions I know there are a bunch of people here that have elantras over the 100k mile mark and still going strong. My car is at 55k and I haven’t had any problems just the normal oil changes, new battery, new tires, brakes, just normal items that need to be replaced with age and I just did the 60k service. So I expect my car to last to at least 100k. So if you can get the history of the vehicle you are planning on purchasing and find that it hasn’t been in any accidents or anything, it should last to 100k and beyond with proper maintenance. The 60k service is very important; it may be costly but definitely essential.

I've got 96,xxx miles on my car. Other than maintenance, the only thing I've had to do was 2 axle seals, and my rear motor mount is sagging.
And 2001-2003 = non-cvvt

Good work on the purchase.

Some of the late model 2003's have CVVT parts in them. For more clarification I'd run a search and you can see what. But, for a 2002 you are in the clear.

sweet, thanks guys. i'll be looking into a waterpump and timing belt for it. just hope this works out as well for her as it did for most of you.

anyways, i guess if i have any more questions i'll just poke around the forums.

I'll say this. I've been having a hard time finding anything bad about the Elantra in general ... period. Every review i read has nothing but good stuff to say about the car, which makes me feel better.

^ In the economical 4 door car bracket, Elantras seem to be one of the best.

Hyundai's in general seem to be good cars. I haven't heard of any systemic crippling problems with any year, make or model of Hyundai, at least since the mid 1990's.

just absolutely horrible customer service. nothing mechanically horrible that i have ever heard of with a hyundai.

^^^ Don't generalize, because you've had bad dealership experiences...

well ok i see your point but i am not the only one, they really do frown upon modding and to me that is not ok. they need to further embrace the aftermarket community just like honda, nissan, mitsubishi, the list is endless anyways you get the point.

yep, that's me....

the beta accent is still running strong, only now with a nasty clutch :D and some more nitrous! he's got it into the mid 14's now with no problem. turbo sometime after the 1st of the year is my best guess.

anyways, yeah... so far so good with the new elantra ... filled it up and its a lil over 50 miles on the tank and the needle hasn't even moved. so, that's definately awesome. lol

Lighter car and nitrous, and only hitting mid 14's? That makes me sad...

Well, that's having severe traction problems in 1st gear and into 2nd .... there is no getting that lil accent to hook up in 1st if you try to spray, or launch hard w/o spray. its instant wheelspin at the revv limiter. yeah, it is light. last time we had in on the scales it was 2320lbs full tank no driver. keep in mind its still a stock ECU and a barebones wiring harness, only a 100 shot. i'm sure the car could crack some high 13's with some slicks and some sort of launch control for the N20. but hey its a work in progress.

anyways... how the F do you set the clock on an 02 Elantra ?

we took the dash apart to put the Alpine in and had to unplug everything (obviously) and the clock reset ... i read the owners manual but to no avail.

TIA

Jake

Hold down the h for the hour, hold down the m for the minute. If it didn't work, you need a new clock.

okay, niether seems to work, but oddly enough it was on time until we unplugged it. oh well.

Unplug it, then plug it in at noon (or midnight). It never fails.

I like your thinking. LOL

The only reason I thought of that, was because one day I was at work, and had to replace someone's radio. When I went to set the clock, it was already correct. Took me a minute to realize that it was because I had plugged it in at noon.

that is exactly what i think they really need to stop frowning upon modding and embrace the new era
