I think the debate about new seats (and correct me if I'm wrong) was that once the side airbags are disengaged, then all the airbags are done. I would assume that your insurance company would also need to be notified if your missing a standard safety feature. Granted side airbags are not standard in the U.S.
I'm pretty sure that a resistor or sensor fouler could be placed somewhere in the side airbag system to fool the car and let the other airbags engage. I am not sure of this, but was considering tib seats a few months back. Also, you really wouldn't know if the rest of the system works until you need them too. Again, I could be wrong, but I'm just stating what I have gathered from previous threads.

01-23-2008, 10:03 AM
so without the side airbags connected, the front airbags wont work? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCK! i want seats but i dont want to risk front airbags not working. i've decided i dont care if the sides work or not anymore.
SilverElantra
01-23-2008, 04:16 PM
ok but if you are getting seats you can get a 4 point harness which will secure better than anything into that seat in case of an accident.
Tommy
01-23-2008, 05:57 PM
well, even if the fronts work but the sides dont, you're likely to run into problems with your insurance company if you get injured in an accident and they can point the blame to the lack of factory side impacts, or the aftermarket seat.
or they can just deny your claim all together because you made modifcations to the car without notifiying them, or using parts that arent DOT approved.
too damn risky if you ask me. And its not like there's anyone out there willing to test if they work or dont. You may be able to trace it with a schematic of the airbag system.

im sure if the airbag light is on i will fail. no? .
NY, now I'm a NYS vehicle inspector, so take this for what it's worth. Your airbag (nor ABS light oddly enough) will NOT cause you to fail your New York State Safety Inspection. If those lights are on, they're noted in the NYS DMV inspection computer that those systems are not functioning properly, they are noted on your printout, but they don't cause you to fail. Keep in mind that all inspections in the state of NY are sent electronically now, usually as soon as the inspection is complete, and DMV will have a record or those lights being on, however, at this point in time, they are not doing anything with them, and the way they do things here, they won't anytime in the near future. As far as your other airbags working with your airbag light on, from what knowledge I have about modern airbag systems, if your light is on, due to your side airbags being disconnected, should you smack your car up, your front airbags SHOULD still fire. The airbag light is there to let you know there is something messed up with a part of a system, and can disable any, or all parts of the system. So if your fronts are fine, they should still work. However, if you take the sides out, your light is on, and something else goes wrong, causing a fault on your fronts, you will never know because the light is already on. Hope this helps, and if I'm wrong, let me know. Sorry about the length of, this but it's my first one, and I wanted to make it a good one! WOO! My thoughts exactly. Don't get me wrong, I love the seats, they're just not worth the risk IMO. I would feel really crappy if someone t-boned the passenger side of my car, and the person riding with me died. There would always be something in the back of my mind about the lack of a bag on their side.
Tommy
01-24-2008, 01:38 AM
and even if it isnt that serious just minor injuries, you're risking financial ruin if your insurance company decides not to cover you. say you hit a car, totalling both cars, say that car's worth $20k, then add your cars value, you now owe $25-30k just in property damage.
Then, you may be looking at law suits, plus any medical costs, which you know you cant go to a hospital for less than $1000.
Id really consider informing your insurance company, as long as you can get it in writing that theyll cover you, you're good. Youll loose discounts for SRS, but better than the alternative if something happens.

01-24-2008, 03:50 AM
if you get t-boned none of ur air bags will go off...thats what happened in my accent which had side curtains...they have to hit you in the frontal side for them to go off, direct side impact does not trip the air bags.
That is not true. I was t-boned exactly where a passenger in the rear drivers side would be sitting and my side airbag went off.

^thats interesting logic. as if the air bag goes off, it means you're not going to walk away?
Airbag deployment is dependent on a bunch of factors, you cant just look at a picture and say, oh the air bag should have gone off. doesnt work that way.
ricerrx7
01-24-2008, 07:11 PM
If the airbag goes off, then that means that you most likely wouldn't have walked away if the airbags had not gone off.

airbags deploy because of conditions met during deceleration, with other factors manufactures do not release. How can you say you know what trips them?
ilanpro
01-24-2008, 10:08 PM
Airbags work on Sensors, I did walk away from the accident, and the airbag shouldhave deployed. but it missed the sensor, so in this case the airbag was useless, nothing happened to me beacause I drive defensively.
Tommy
01-24-2008, 10:14 PM
sensors in conjunction with algorithms that calculate how and when the air bag should deploy.
It doesnt "miss the sensor" the sensor isnt like a switch thats on or off. Its an accelerometer, you cant miss inertia.
And how exactly did you drive defensively into an accident? Wouldnt driving defensively keep you out of the wreck in the first place?
PSUsouthpaw
01-24-2008, 10:18 PM
Sometimes you can't defend against the utter and total incompetency of other drivers. Defensive driving reduces the damage you take at least, if not avoiding accidents altogether.

when i took my console out, to change my shifter bulb to red... i bent the rear brackets inside a lil bit, so that when the center console is mounted again, it sits a lil further away from the seats... but that didnt help as much as i have hoped... it still rubs... :( is that normal?? does everyones do this?

(Yelling from the far left field) I See No sig from ricer I see a sig from pete. Hey Ilan I LOVE YOUR SEATS! did you take any pics of the brackets? I fabricated brackets for my father In-laws Bronco, and since were as off topic as we can go I'll get you guys some pics of it. I did alot of custom fab work on this thing and I even painted it too.

I see all sigs. Love the seats. Want to do it to my car. I will talk to my insurance company when the time comes. I've also read that Canadian Xd's don't have the side air bags, so you could take a Canadian air bag unit and do a swap. Again this is all in theory until someone does it.
I would love a black/grey or carbon fiber racing seat. mmmmm. Then do a nice little two tone for the rear and I'd be set.
