View Full Version : Got an idea!!!!!

Ok I was looking at my headlights through my living room window earlier and got an idea. I'm thinking about separating the lenses from the housing and using some of my tinted vinyl on the inside of the turn signal part of the lens. Kinda like the kdm style but not. I know this vinyl looks almost black on the dome and map lights and is pretty dark on the tails. I'm not sure about it though. I'm gonna take out one of my lights and put some vinyl on the outside( and see how it looks) and then post up some pics and get some opinions. Just as soon as the wife gets back with the car.

Ok here it is on the outside. Gotta wait again for the car to come back to see what it looks like lit up and in the car actually!!!!!http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x99/03xd/1tintedturn.jpg

i like it. but i think it might look a lil better if it wasnt so see thru... i personally dont like how its a yellow'ish tint where the turn bulb is... maybe a darker tint would fix that. but overall i do like how it looks.

I'm hoping to get this end result(But i'm scared to open my lenses) I think i'm just gonna suck it up and go for it!!!!

I put a layer on the inside and outside of the turn signal lens. I was worried about separating the lens from the housing but the heat gun FTW. I am more than confidant about it now. Tomorrow I will do the other side and get some better pics. I think it looks really good. (Oh and I also need to get a new lamp for the low beams) I kinda dropped it into the sink and broke it :( :( :( Oh well.

Doohickie
01-03-2008, 10:14 PM
Heat gun is good. I put my headlamp assemblies into the oven at about 225 and they were not too hot to handle (except for the metal bits) and the glue came apart fine.

i didnt use tint film, i used this spray called "black transparent window tint" you can get it at hobby lobby by the model cars where the paint is. also get a can of high gloss to make it shiny. i did about 6 coats on my taillights. its only 10 bucks for it all :-)

i went pretty dark lol, but still good light output because the spray is transparent

looks great! i had that same idea but im using niteshades instead of the tint,
and also painting the frame a darker black because i think mine looks more like a gray type color.

i might even paint the frame gloss black. i have yet to seperate my lenses though.

I also need to redo my niteshaded tails because one is looking darker than the other.

Not if you replace it with the silverstars that light up amber. That's what he was talking about.

How hard is it to remove the top plastic piece and put it back on? I would totally do this, and while I'm at it I need to wet-sand the inside of one of my lenses...

It's much simpler than you might imagine. Including removal, heat and reinstall times, I removed the amber lenses from my XD2 in about an hour and a half. I used the directions similar to the DIY for headlight painting (http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/headlight.php) to get them apart, except: The only parts I removed from the headlamps before putting them in the oven were the bulbs themselves, and I set the oven to 225 F.

I preheated the oven, went out to the car and removed one headlight and put it in the oven, went back to the car and took the other headlight out, took the first one out of the oven and put the second one in. The headlight coming out of the oven can be handled with bare hands, but avoid the little metal bits; they will be HOT (but they won't burn your skin with short contact). I pried one of the clips with a screwdriver, put one in to hold it open and then just did each clip in turn, working my way around the assembly. Once I got it apart, there are two screws that hold the amber in; very easy to remove. As soon as it was out I put the housing back together and everything closed up tight. Then I did the other headlight, then put everything back together.

The reseal was flawless. I was very, very concerned about all that before I did it; you just gotta whip up the cojones and do it, dude. I know exactly where you're coming from, but trust me, once you do it you'll be: "That was no big deal at all!"

It was pretty easy. I used a heat gun around the edges to warm the glue up. It took me longer to muster up the balls to do this than it did to actually do it.

I'm kinda undecided now. How bout backing up to take a pic of it?

All i did was heat the lens edge again with the heat gun and started from the high beam side to the turn signal side pressing firmly. Once I did that I used the heat gun around the edges of it sealed together and pressed my weight against it for a few minutes to make sure.
