I'm taking my car to a mechanic tomorrow to replace
Timingbelt,Waterpump,and acc. belts replaced.
He's asking $550 if he orders the parts(with labor)
and $300 for labor if I brought him the parts.
Now should I pick up parts from Hyundai or AdvanceAutoparts?
Called up 3 Local Hyundai and this is the quote I got
Water Pump $107
W.P Gasket $6
TimingBelt $65
3 Acc. Betls $70
which comes out close to $250 after tax.

And AdvanceAutoParts I'm looking at
Water Pump with Gasket $65
W.P Gasket $3
Timing Belt $45
3 Acc. Betls $40
which comes out to $160

Which parts should I go with??
Are aftermarket parts really bad??
what do you guys recommend? and am I missing anything while im at this??

thanks,
Tae

W/P & Belt OE ONLY. The rest, do as you wish. The T-belt's from the aftermarket world are notorious for having the wrong shape and size of teeth, allowing them to chew themselves into oblivion in half the time. When they snap, time for a new engine.

So, is $90 worth taking the chance on a $1000 engine replacement?

Agreed ... though 107$ for the WP, isn't that high??? I know I have a Beta 1 but if I remember correctly mine is around 75$

yes, go OEM for the timing belt, and Water pump. then you will be :drive: for a long time.

Okay just picked up my car from this mechanic, I brought him Genuine Hyundai Water Pump and WP Gasket and Timing Belt, and I used his accessory belts and his antifreeze for the job. He charged me $350 for the whole job, was this a good deal? I know that there are 3 belts on this but on the invoice there are only 2, and i popped the hood and checked the belts but one of them hasn't been replaced. And I only saw 2 belts, where is third belt located? And there is this noise from one of these belts it's not loud, it's just little louder than engine noise. And i check the antifreeze and he didn't even top it off!! WTF? It can't be the timing belt thats making this noise right? I don't know what im gonna do about this whether go b#$%@ at him or just tell him to fix this right.

and does anyone know what kind of noise timing belt makes?
possible that they messed up timing belt??

I think it was a iffy deal.

You have to pay 60 or so dollars for the OEM timing belt, W/P... then labor, then for his belts, then for the antifreeze..

I have a different sound also after getting all three belts changed and the timing belt, like a "belt" sound lol.

There are three belts, the little skinny belt for the P/S. then that one is connected to the ALT belt, then i *think* that one is connected to the W/P one.

Its alway best to go oem, that way you will know it will fit right the first time.

some aftermarket parts are made really cheap and will last alot less than oem parts, give your engine what it wants, OEM parts only.

it is not that loud but little whining noise i suppose, doesn't happen when idling but when i step on a gas... this is getting very annoying and when I took it back to him he says because it is new belt and told me to give it couple of days, is this true? i wonder if this ever happened if i took it to the dealership...

It won't just go away if it's what happened to mine. If the tension is off even a little it will sound kinda like a supercharger, getting louder as rpm's rise. That noise doesn't go away with "belt break in". I made the mistake (do to a lack of time and having the money to have someone that I thought I could trust, do my timing belt) of believing that for a few days. After we, I helped the guy at his shop this time, corrected it that the noise was gone. He got some gauge out and the belt was just within the specs on the tight side but once we pulled some off the noise vanished.

so this is coming noise from timing belt? not from accessory belts?
and can you be more specific? i didn't really get it!!

thanks

Post a video of the noise and I can tell you if its the same sound. It could be the other belts. Mine sounded like a mini-supercharger. Silent at idle and the whine got louder as rpm went up. I confirmed it to be the timing belt with a stethoscope. The noise was clearly coming from behind the cover.

2002 gls...
so it was accessory belts that was making the noise? not the timing belt?
it sounds like mine... was it fixable?

Mine could be heard lower, but wasn't really noticeable until it got to about 2k rpm. Then you could clearly hear it over my engine (with after market intake/exhaust)

Step by step.

1) Crank engine and allow it to warm up
2) Stick stethoscope to timing cover. Hear it clear as day coming from behind cover.

or

at the shop we removed the other belts on a cool engine and fired it for a few seconds, no noise. (he wanted to be 200% sure. If it was the timing belt be wanted to disassemble it and makes sure everything was ok before resetting tension)

or

spray the belts you can see (not the timing belt) with a little WD-40 and see if the noise changes at all. No noticeable change in the annoying sound could point towards the Tbelt. (I like WD-40 more than belt dressing... ive heard bad things about what belt dressing does to the belts over time)

Is it a whining or squealing sound?

2002 GLS
01-12-2008, 10:21 PM
Its the whining sound. The squealing is fixed my own lol.

I had all the Acc belts replaced (Hyundai OEM belts) and also the T-Belt( again Hyundai OEM) at 61K miles, now has 68,950 miles, and whining still there.. and no, everytime i look at my car i want to get rid of it... look for your self.

I have *heard* that the timing belt being a little over spec tight will cause that ...

Go get a can of WD-40 and hose the accessory belts down. If the noise does not change at all... good chance its the timing belt. That is if you don't want to get a stethoscope or take those belts off. Going nuts about it isn't going to get it fixed faster.

Timing belt tension can be adjusted without doing the entire job over. The upper cover can be removed and the tensioner pulley adjusted slightly. It needs to be done carefully. The accessory belts have a tendency to stretch slightly after a few hundred miles. and can be re-tensioned if they squeel. Was there a major noise before the timing and accessory belts were changed. The A/C belt(at the bottom) I believe has a tensioner pulley which has an internal bearing which could get noisy.

there was no noisy before t-belt and acc belts were replaced...
and i will try wd-40 tomorrow and make sure it's the t-belt thats causing this noise.... guy thank you so much for all these kind info's... i really appreciate it and i will keep you guys updated!! Thanks

After all it was the T-belt, like 2001VE mentioned they just removed the cover and ajdusted the tensioner little bit and now that annoying noise is gone!!
