before anyone jumps in, im aware, its not a "toy"
picked this up today. Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm...449+tax w/ 50$ mail in rebate, came w/ 2 magazines (12 rds each) and the rebate includes 2 more magazines
bit smaller than the sigma i picked up a few months ago, adjustable grips. trigger pull is MUCH lighter than the sigma, and will be a good CCW gun when i get my cert

glock is the only way to go when it comes to handguns, metal guns are so 90's.
and what happens when you have to shoot someone underwater or inside a sand dune, only the glock will save ya then.
does seem like a good deal though, hope you enjoy

wow. uninformed you are young grasshopper
both guns frames are poly. if i remove the slide and clip, as just measured on my handy dandy kitchen scale, the frame is 5.5oz.
also, (and you can find this online, i dont feel like pulling it up now), the sigma i have (one w/ silver slide) was based on a glock design. SO MUCH, that glock sued smith and wesson, and won. the glock slide will actually fit the S&W frame, but it wont fire. they had to change a part slightly so it was no longer a patent infringement

I was just joking... sorry.
Do you go to a range to fire it? How far do you stand to shoot targets with a handgun?

i prefer handguns to be a little more heavy personally, it gives me more confidence that it will actually drop whatever i have to shoot, and feels less like a toy, but thats just me...

You can bye a handgun w/o being a licsenced carrier there? Nice piece either way. The crazier the neighbors moving in around me get, the more I think about upgrading from the .22 Taurus.

Don't get me wrong, because I love my glock, especially now that I have installed the Lasermax laser sight (lasermax.com) on it, but the Glock does have the KaBOOM factor - google kaboom and glock if you don't know what I am talking about.
Good choice in the M&P Evan, I like my S&W almost as much as I like my Glock. Have you shot it yet? If you want a laser sight for it you should check out Crimson Trace or Lasermax. Crimson Trace the laser is in the grip where the Lasermax would go on the rail.

Not only closed minded, but completely wrong as well. 1911 style pistols have been the stalwart in uber dependability in all conditions, including packed with mud, sand and grit.
As for Evan's choice, not bad. Smith has come a long way after making some not so dependable crap back in the late 90's. But one question: Why do you keep getting 9mm? For a true self defense weapon, you really want some "knockdown" power. I've seen what a 9 can do, and yes the object or target will probably die, but they are usually still standing able to shoot back, lunge forward with a knife or something other than fall down. I prefer my .45 (Colt 1991A1 Compact), but also carried a .40 at one time as well. If I ever have to use it (and God forbid I am never faced with that) I want to make sure the f-er is going down and not getting back up.

^^^ Agrees.
Saying that, my S&W is a 9mm. My Glock is a .40, and is my normal carry weapon. Unless it is the summer and I am in shorts, then I carry either my Colt Mustang .380 or my S&W hammerless in .38 special, mainly because they will slip in and out of my pocket with no worries.
Oh, and Evan if you are going to carry absolutely get hydro-shocks.
BobMs_wht2k2
01-19-2008, 10:19 AM
Hydro-shocks. . good advice!
For a little comparative "demo", my best friend used to carry a 9mm Beretta 92FS. One day we were out shooting at my place. I got a bright idea and stood a muffler up on end (we had 4 as targets) grabbed his Beretta and put two rounds dead smack in the middle. Both passed through the muffler, rocked it a little, but left it standing. My fried was giving me that "WTF?" look as I pulled out my Colt, put one slug right next to the previous rounds and the muffler flipped over and the .45 slug, even though it was pushing out 1/2" on thebackside, was still in the steel muffler.
That sold the deal. He traded his Beretta 3 weeks later and picked up a Beretta Cougar .45.

i still love beretta's especially chambered in 9mm, i woulden't trade it for any other caliber, a beretta with the right bullets and a nice good +P hollowpoint load can do a S-load of damage, i understand you get a .45 with a +P load and you can do a whole lot more, but, i like having the option of 15+1 in the pipe for self defense
i wish i could get a CCW in jersey, but people suck here, although i still have my permit to carry for FL, and if memory serves, it transferees to a lot of diffrent states
i just picked up the new beretta 90-two, i'll post pictures when i get a chance, but it's pretty sweet, also picked up a Taurus model 94, (9 shot .22 wheelgun) which is a kinda cool backyard plinker... ( if my backyard wasn't next to a school )

the 9mil has plenty of stopping power if you dump like 5-6 shots into the chest. I mean if you have 15 shots in the magazine use them and make sure you are getting the job done. If it ever comes down to it, believe me when I tell you, someones dying from lead poisoning and it's not gonna be me. I was robbed at gunpoint and pistol whipped in new jersey a few years ago. I got lucky once. It won't happen again.

Seriously, if you need 15+1 rounds, you shouldn't be where you are. 1 or 2 is more than enough for personalt protection. We're not talking about gangsta thugs that spray bullets hoping to hit something here. Learn the weapon you're carrying, learn to be accurate and learn to make that first shot count because you may never geta chance for a second one.
Personally, I've put about 1500-2000 rds through my colt, and about 1000 through through my backup, .38spl Rossi. Either one feels natural in my hand and to hit a mansize target at 10yds is like pointing a finger. After time and practice it becomes second nature. My friend and I used to practice alot, part of that time was removing it from concealment to shoot one round into the target. Closest to the mark we made "won". If you are ever in that situation, you're not going to be able to have the gun out already, and you're not going to have time to aim and properly hold the weapon every time. You're going to be relying on whatever "instincts" you pick up with it.
So becoming familiar with it, know where it's going to shoot, keep it clean and pray you never have to rely on those instincts.

yea well unfortunatly to get a CCW in new jeresey
an applicant must prove he has a "justifiable cause and need for such a permit"
so basically no one i know has been allowed to get one,
i've seriously considered carrying anyway, but even if a store i was in got robbed, when i drew, i'd be facing charges as well... it's stupid
and personally i hate glocks, i don't like polymer based guns, seem too .. i don't know fragile? i mean i've seen the video's of it fireing under water, and tourture tests, but the bullet has no knetic energy when fired under water, so unless it's point blank it's not gonna do anything, i like to know if i need to , i can hammer in tent steaks with my gun and then go and shoot it like nothing happened, also like the ability to fire off some of my handloads ( which are +P+ loads ) without worry of it blowing up in my face

ACtually, that's not entirely true either. I believe it was in San Francisco that a 6', 230lb guy igh on coke took over 30 9mm rds center mass and was still on his feet. It was the 12ga that put him down.

i understand the fact that i shoulden't need more than 1-2 rounds, but i feel more confortable with more, and personally if i am forced to draw/shoot someone, i'm gonna shoot them somewhere vunerable, and i've put soo many rounds through my beretta, i think it's a part of my arm when it comes right down to it, i can draw and chamber a round in one motion ( if one is not already chambered ) but a mix of black talons and FMJ in the clip ( that i used to carry when i lived in FL ) will probably do the job, i mean chances of the guy expecting a civil to draw on him are probably really slim anyway

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT_C-iJfMe4 <-- haha
honestly, i dont think a .40 or .45 is going to be necessary. a 9mm hollow point will be fine for a carry round
also, it will allow this gun to double as a good plinking gun, cheap rounds, and something i can switch out the grips and let the g/f shoot when we go out
BobMs_wht2k2
01-19-2008, 12:19 PM
I always bought in bulk from a local reloader. 1000 rds cost me $90 in .45ACP, or $80 for 1000rds of 9mm.
We got a handle on some +P .45 rounds once. They were a 1440f.p.s. round that was HOT. At night, it would spray a fireball a foot wide an 2feet long out of my 3.4" barrel! It was amazing to watch, but I wouldn't want to put too many of those on an unprepared gun!
wazntme
01-19-2008, 03:56 PM
thats why i won't use a glock to fire them, i reaload my own rounds so it's very cheap for me to have rounds, i woulden't use my own reloads for defense / carry rounds though, i've realoded thousands and thousands of rounds without error, but it only takes one grain or primer punch error to make the round jam in the gun
yea my gun is definatly setup for +P rounds, ;-)

^^^^ More good advice. You can never practice too much. And remember, practice doesn't make perfect - only perfect practice makes perfect. Also practice removing jams, especially the stovepipe versions. I have started practicing on 2 targets, I draw from concealment and put double taps in both targets as fast as I can.

Have you checked to see if having a FL CCW will get you 'special' consideration on getting a CCW there? They might grandfather you.
I love my Glock, it just works for me it is light, accurate and feels nice in my hand. But the big thing is that YOU have to be comfortable with it, so if you are not then you are not, and a handgun is something you really do want to feel comfortable with when you are carrying.

well, i went out today, put about 250 rounds through it. this gun is deadly accurate compared to my sigma. after a few clips through it and getting a feel for it, i was hitting 10 of 12 rounds within 3" of the target, from about 12 yards away. ill post some pics of my targets later tonight, along with a video of a little competition me and a buddy had with my 9mm and his .40.

All this talk about shooting, I think I will head out and do some in a minute. The guy that lives behind me has over 180 acres and that is where we shoot at. He has a range set up mostly for his rifles so he has it measured in 100 - 150 - 200 - 250 - and 300 yard increments so he can sight his scopes in.

I live in AZ and you can own any gun out here. They sell tommy guns but you cant have the barrel clip so what is the point. Evan my boy had that same sigma and I was hitting the targe 30 yards out with ease. That gun is easier to shoot than a smaller gun. I need to get another pistol but have not decided which one. It is soo easy to get a CCW it is like two weekend classes at the CC and that is it.(4 days)

8 hour NRA class here + qualifying (unless you do it at the gunshow then no qualifying). Then get your fingerprints done at your local PD and send them to Tallahassee with a passport photo. Provided you have no record you get your license within 90 days. The other good thing about a CCW is there is no waiting period when buying weapons from that point on. You pick out the new weapon, pay, and leave the same day.

Ya well I was in and out with my gun in 15 min. They just call the FBI in DC and as long as you dont have a felony than you are good. You can walk around every where with it on your hip no prob. You need a CCW to conceal it on you or your car. I love AZ for that only reason. It took my two weeks to get my Credit Union account and an hour to get my cell phone but 15 min for my gun. GO figure why someone gets murdered almost everyday in Phoenix!!!!!!!!!!

In Florida a few years ago the voted in a "cooling down" period. You have to wait a few days to get your handgun. I think you can still get rifles and shotguns the sameday, just handguns you have to wait. Unless of course you buy at a gun show then you get it the same day, haha, go figure.
Oh, and Evan nice groups with a new gun.

that ensure can in the video was a *****. figure 12 yards and the can is 2"x3" lol
i was thinking about it, and decided to sell the sigma. heavy trigger + not being able to shoot it were the main deciding factors. plus, this new gun is better all around.
i listed it last night on our local car club for 235 firm...i had the 1 guy notorious for lowballing offer me 200, told him no, and if he needed a couple days to come up with another 35$, let me know then...wake up today and had 1 guy ready to send me $ via paypal as soon as i told him and the next guy had cash in hand and wanted to come see it.
guy w/ paypal came over tonight and picked it up. now i can put that towards my CC and have about 250$ left to pay it off

What do you do about registering it in his name? Not sure how that works as I keep all the guns I buy. In Florida you don't have to re-register the weapon, it would be advisable, but you don't have to. Took my son shooting tonight, he mostly shot my 22LR rifle but I let him shoot the 9mm 3 times, after that he said it hurt his wrist so he was done - he is 9yrs old. His 3 shots at 10 yards were in a 3 inch group.

A parent and a student of mine went with me to shoot my .44 magnum and their .40 and .38. The idea is to stiffen up the wrist and arms so it won't hurt. The kid wanted to try my .44, but I stood behind him in the beginning (he is 11) so he would get the feel of the kickback.
