View Full Version : Why an Elantra is better then a 3 series BMW

It is simple, really. It can be expressed in two words: cup holders.
A friend of mine has a 328 and I'll take my Elantra over her BMW any day. The performance is quite similar, the maintenance cost is much lower for me and obviously, I have more cup holders.

I still love the hidden cupholders in the backseat. I was amazed when I first found them.

Actually, with the free 4yr/50k mile maintenance on the BMW, the maintenance will actually cost you less with that.
And how many cup holders do you really need?:D (BTW, what year 328?)
xdforme22
01-22-2008, 10:57 AM
Yeah, and then you start paying like $100 an oil change. Makes up for the free ones real fast. Not to mention the brakes and other items that will wear out after 50k.

Free? HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's a good one. Ain't nothin' free, it's just hidden in the cost of the car.
ricerrx7
01-22-2008, 11:06 AM
Bob true, but he just said the maintenance.
XDforme, $150+ on the oil services. BUT, the interval is 1yr/15k miles.
While maintenance costs are high, the BMW has a better turn radius and panel construction (talking about last year's models, haven't seen new ones yet). BTW, it took a (censored) back seat adventure for me to find those cupholders in the back seat... needless to say it added a lighter side to that day. It's a small thing but I like the wiper blade placement on the 328, slightly more leftwards, IMO.

I'm sorry, I don't think you can compare the performance of an Elantra to a BMW 328.
I like my Elantra and all, but it's no 2.8 liter BMW 3-series!

To a non-car person, an Elantra might very well be a preferable car. Stiff suspensions and high maintenance costs of the bimmer would make the Elantra very appealing to someone not concerned with performance driving.
I wouldn't own one on a bet, I've seen the older trade-ins and what it takes to keep them road-worthy. No thanks.
kylemorg
01-22-2008, 02:41 PM
All I was saying is that unless the person in the BMW 328 doesn't know how to drive at all, and the Elantra has beefed up springs, shocks (or coilovers), biggerwheels, stickier tires, forced induction, etcetera, there's no way the performance (skidpad, slalom, acceleration, 1/4 mile speed, etc) of an Elantra is comparable to a BMW 328.

OK... I couldn't find 328i normal info but I did find 2007 328I 6 speed convertible numbers (From http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=120817/pageNumber=5#ets):
0-60: 6.6 seconds
1/4 mi: 15.0 seconds
60-0 braking: 111 feet
Lateral acceleration: .90g
600 ft slalom: 66.3 mph
The only Elantra number that's even close would be the braking. If you can beat a 328i (hard top, convertible or wagon) in any normally aspirated elantra, then the 328i driver either wasn't trying or couldn't drive to save his a$$. I doubt you could get the XD chassis to pull .9 G and 66 mph in the slalom no matter what you did to it.
Bob, please don't turn into one of those ricer-types that brag about beating a lamborghini Murcielago in their 1996 Honda Civix HX and try to pretend it was an even-driver race! The only way anyone in any Elantra (including you) beat a 328i in a straight line or in a road race course would be 'cause the other driver couldn't drive.
BobMs_wht2k2
01-22-2008, 03:55 PM
I never did skippy. RE-read my post.
Mine was an early 90's critter. Tons of body roll. Young driver.
I love how a tongue in cheek thread gets all the BMW nut-swingers up in a tizzy. Guess what, Bimmer is NOT the be all to end all.
kylemorg
01-22-2008, 04:03 PM
Well, gee, early 90's 328i to 2001-2006 Elantra XD. At least a decade more wear and tear on the Beamer, and a decade newer design on the Elantra...
Let's see someone beat an early 90's 328i with an early 90's Elantra, or a 2006 328i in a 2006 Elantra!
FYI '07 HD 5-speed
0-60: 8.4 sec
1/4 mile 16.4
skidpad: 0.80 G

Like I said. . . Bimmer nut-swingers getting their panties in a twist.
You know. . .IIRC, an E-club member got .90G on a skidpad test in his 03 GT Sedan with worn out Azenis on it.
But of course, that can't be either, because we all know BMW is the only car that can achieve that.

those cupholders have never been used in my car. in fact i forget i have them every few months then this forum reminds me. took me around 6 months to even notice they were there. i was moving something into the back seat and hit the release by accident and was like "damn, look at that, rear cup holders!"

You can talk and analyze numbers all you want. Take a 2004+ 3-series for a drive. Now drive the Elantra. Compare. 3-series wins.

EDIT: Here it is: Click the one called "cupholders" on the lower-right side

if were going to get into commercials, nothing beats the azera commercial where its vs the lexas :D
and while i would rather have my elantra at the moment, if someone offered me either car and i had to keep it, couldnt sell it. i would totally take the bmw..
but i would have to mod the elantra cupholders into it.. yeah baby

Not the folding rear seats like the hatchback has though. In the sedan the seatbacks fold down, and it has the cupholder (except for some 01s). In the hatchback, the seat bottoms flip up, the seatbacks fold down and there is no cupholder.

Good thing you didn't buy the hatchback... then it wouldn't have the rear cupholders and wouldn't have been better than the Bimmer.
That must be why I think a 328i woud be a better performing car than my Elantra -- I don't have rear cupholdersin my Elantra GT!!! :(

Thankfully, I very rarely have to deal with customers at work. It gets frustrating trying to talk to them about their cars, because they know absolutely nothing about them. I had one customer ask me how you're supposed to know how much air is in the tires. Someone installed an ipod interface kit, and the next day the customer brought the car back saying that it didn't work. It worked just fine, they never read the instruction manual we gave them to figure out how it works. We get several people in every day with tire pressure monitor lights on, because they NEVER check their tire pressures, then they wonder why they have to keep coming in every few months with this "problem".

If I had my choice of cars, I'd probably try Lotus. I've always loved how they squeeze tons of horsepower out of teeny engines. I remember reading that they got somewhere around 400 HP out of a twin turbo 2.0L 4 cylinder in the Lotus Esprit back in the early 90's.
I doubt that you'd find many cupholders (or any, perhaps) in a Lotus Elise or Esprit, though. So by some people's definition, an Elantra would still be better. ;)

They are cute, but I physically just can't get into and out of those. I have to tech them at our auto-x's, which requires me getting into them to check the brake pedal and throttle return. I just can't do it gracefully, easily or comfortably. Of course, being a "wide" person it's a little cramped once inside.

True they are quite small. I know I would be cramped, hell I was cramped in a Z3 and they are pretty spacious for such a small car.

I've had my car mistaken for: a BMW, a Saab, but most interesting to me, a Volvo. A friend I don't see often was at another friend's house. He saw my car outside (this was like 3 years ago) and said "you drive a Volvo? Who the F drives a Volvo." I had to tell him 3 times it wasn't a Volvo before he stopped ripping on me for driving a Volvo - he's an American car only guy.
With the eyelids on my headlights, the different grill, and when I had the lower front lip on, if my car was backed into the garage I could easily see the BMW resemblence.
I've had my Elantra mistaken for.... an Elantra, people around here know which cars are which. My Elantra's better than a BMW because it can drive in the snow. (Saw a 7-series wrapped aruond a pole the other day... musta been a lease 'cause the guy looked like he'd lost his first puppy)

For the record the 328 was a 2001, owned and driven by a female co-worker who barely knows to get gas, actually, I think her husband fuels it up for her.
Last week she was griping about how she needed a new battery and it cost her over $400.
As for owning a BMW, I have a friend who works for BMW and let me drive a M5 for by birthday last year. Wow, that was fun! I think I'll still take a 2nd gen Camaro or a '77 Corvette over a BMW, they are more fun to work on, and a lot cheaper too.

I have had my elantra mistaken for a beamer. I parked next to a silver 3 series that had chrome 5 stars and when I came out the beamer had left already and this guy that came out the door at the same time was like hey I like your beamer and I was like it is leaving the parking lot I drive an Hyundai Elantra. You should have seen the look on his face!
