My car has 98.000 miles on it. I bought it half year ago. But i have no clue when its time to change the gear oil with an automatic transmission. Do i even have to??

Every 30k miles. You're way over due. Check the condition of the fluid before you change it; If it looks black then just leave it alone, as changing won't help anything. If it still looks decent, then I would go ahead and change it.

ATF is normally red in color, as for when to change it alot depends on how the car is used and what type of fluid you use. 30,000miles is a severe use number. If you do alot of highway like I do 60,000 to 75,000 is well with in the numbers allowed by your owners manual. The manual for my 07 3.3L Sonata says 100,000 miles for a normal duty fluid change. I would at least drain what you can from the pan and refill with a SP-III compatible/approved fluid.
