I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday who mentioned that the Elantra depreciated rather quickly. Knowing that he is dumber than a tree stump i decided to check it out for my self. I compared 03 civic with around 60,000miles to 03 elatra with 60,000 miles and found that the elantra averaged about $2,000 less. However the new price for an elantra was about about $2,000 less. So i called him this morning and told him he was an idiot and he said "you have to go by percentage like edmunds and kbb do". Why the hell would i care about percentage? If two cars one $30,000 and one $15,000 both lose 50% of their value after 6 years, I want the $15,000 car because it only lost $7,500 in value rather than $15,000. Anyways that's my first rant on exd.

^Something I've been saying for a while now. Resale is only import to the idiots that MUST have a new car every other year.

Exactly! The main point of buying a car is buying something that you like in your price range. Just get what you like. If it's something you like, there is no need to sell it!

I never did understand why people do that. I work for a Honda dealer and we have people trading in 06 civics with 20,000 on the clock for a new one. It's not even redesigned. It's the same car. People are dumb.

Haha.. yeah.. a friend of my mom did similar thing with her 06(or 07) Camry. She thought that her Camry got so many scratches and dents because her Camry is "not lucky" or "cursed". (It's just because the car had been parked in "wrong" places.) I think it had less than 10,000 miles.

My pet peeve, people who think "that funny sign" means no peeing.

How does someone "force" you to buy an Elantra? Did they hold a gun to your head and say "Buy this car now or I blow your brains out?"

i dont undersand whats wrong with the elantra. for what the car is and what it cost its a nice lil car IMO.
when i bought my car depreciation wasnt even on my mind, no matter what car you buy soon as you drive off the lot your in the red.lol. so the whole re-sale value issue is crazy to me.

I don't expect any resale value for my elantra when I'm done with it. I'll be replacing the trans at some point whenever it craps out and I've been considering a used engine to rebuild and drop in over this winter or next. way I figure, just coming out of college, a car payment is not high on my list of necessities. Plus I have just about everything I've wanted done to the Elantra, so why move on from it?

Most Hyundais for now are cars to be bought and driven for 8+ years.
That is slowly changing and in perhaps 10-15 years new Hyundais won't have the depreciation like they do now. Until then, drive them for a long time and there is nothing to worry about.

No, but when u grandfather is rich as hell and he tells u, u have to get what I tell u to get it's hard, to be honest I wanted a civic but because it was $1,000 more then the elantra he said no. I'm not saying im not grateful for the car but I figured if im paying the bill atleast get me a car that I want.

Yep yep ^^^^
I bought my car because I liked it....I'm not thinking on getting rid of it anytime soon....the only way the car won't cut it for me is when gas prices are too much (one reason I bought my car) or I get into an accident (hopefully not)...I keeping it until I can't drive it no more. The parts for them are everywhere unlike my previous car.
Unless a "classic" or a rare car...no car holds it's money. A DD is not an investment, it's a commodity.
