is there a way to tell if its gone bad or not without taking it out? none of my maintenence receipts say that it was done since I owned the car, and i've had the car for about 50xxx miles.

Nope no way to tell.
Plus even if you have it in your hands it's really hard to tell (almost opaque plastic) to see unless you cut it open, here's what mine looked like:

What you need to cut to check it (after that your filter is good for scrap so only do this with the old one, lol).

Here is mine after I changed it at 76,000 last year.
This is the fuel that come out of it. The fuel should still look clear if the fuel filter is still good.

thanks guys. I'll probably hold out til march or so. im leaving for 5 months of training then, and im leaving my car with my parents. I'll just pay them to take it to the dealer and have it done. i need an alignment, a new door, front fascia and i wanna try and get a sun roof installed anyways. that way it can spend as much time in the shop as necessary, as i'll be on the other side of the country!

wow! your going to spend some big bucks there. fuel filter at the dealer cost about $200 to change, plus all that other stuff you are doing it will just add up.

i know it'll be expensive, but i wont be driving it for 5 months, more or less, so at least they could keep it as long as necessary to finish the work. i'll be somewhere for my training where it will be d*mn near impossible to spend more than $20 a week, so i'll have some extra to use up. :D
