I was hoping someone might be able to fill me in on how to transfer files, via intra net (if it's possible to connect my two computers through the router). I just bought an HPdv9730nr notebook and have a really old gateway desktop. My drives in the desktop are kind of shot so copying or burning anything solid is impossible. I don't know if it matters, but I have vista on the new pc(possible compatibility issues?). Thanks in advance for any advice.

vista and another OP can be a problem together. Just try to make a connection trough a LAN (locan network) that should do the trick. Make sure both computrer share files, and are open to getting files from other computers.

Also, make sure both files are part of the same workgroup.

For a novice to networking, it may be easier to use a USB flash drive to copy your files over. Especially when trying to get Vista to play nice with an older OS - it can be a huge PITA. Plus, if you get one you can use it on your new Vista laptop as a READYBOOST drive (kinda like a RAM expansion). I'd recommend a 4GB flash drive, as that's the most Vista can use for READYBOOST.

These a program you can install to make it really simple. You install it on both computers, and it sets everything up for you. Let me search for it.

www.networkmagic.com

They have free trial software that will allow you to do what you are trying to do. Ive personally tried it, after spending hours trying to setup shared folders between a vista laptop, and xp desktop. Installed the program on both computers, and it worked great.

Great program, I have a licensed version I use on my home network.

You will need to:
1) Setup a network (ensure same workgroup as mentioned)
2) Enable file sharing on both computers
3) Check if you can see each other on my network places

On Vista, sometimes I cannot see my other computer, but I simply click on the currect computer which is something like \\computerName and changed the computerName to the name of the other PC, which showed the shared documents folder of the other PC.
