Suppose the car is salty and dirty and hasn't been washed in a while but the weather outside is such that by the time you return from the car wash the car will look as it did before you left the house. Is it of any value to still get the car washed knowing that it will be dirty by the time you get home ? My concern is to prevent the car from rusting . So if the old salt is removed in the carwash but new salt covers it afterwards going home then has anything been accomplished ? It is snowing so much here in Toronto this month that there doesn't seem to be a dry day to get the car washed .

i would wash it...just remove the salt thats been there the longest...the longer it sits the more time it has to eat away at your body...if you dont have a garage you should maybe check in with like pepboys about a car port?

yeah... it would probably be better to wash it anyways, like craziecracker said, to get rid of the salt thats been sitting there eating away at ur car.i go to wash my car on any good day we get here, altho it hasnt snowed much lately, so there hasnt been much salt on the roads, mostly just mud.

I think they're right about getting the old salt off, even if your car is still dirty, it's not as dirty (for a few minutes), and I always like to cycle out my salt layers periodically. Think of it as a maintenance item!

My next question would be about washing the car in extremely cold weather. Would it be better to wait for a milder day to get the car washed ?

water can freeze on ur car and even crack parts...headlights,sidemarkers,etc. just wait for a nicer day i guess

I haven't washed my car at all this winter I was just looking out the window at it with all the salt on it lol. we've had enough rain though to wash the salt off from previous days of salty roads.

Does wax/sealant protect the paint from salt?

yes it does however it does. we are so lucky in washington they dont salt the roads here they sand them. So every summer we get to repaint our cars and replace our windshields and headlights.
Washed mine today... just a simple touchless wash at the Canadian Tire... 8 bucks well spent in my mind.
