OMG, i got my one headlight off to take off those god dam stupid orange things...i tried blowdrying it to loosen the glue but nothing...i was going to bake the things but the moms started flipping out...if somebody is in the area and will do this, i will pay you...ive been so patient and trying to trim the glue off but its not budging at all...

you really have to heat it up and then you need to bend the tabs back, its ok to bend the plastic because you are going to re-heat it and bend them back when you put it back together. did both my headlights in 30 minutes with a blow drier.

SilverElantra

blow drier is safer cause you wont melt any of the housing. i have seen some people **** this mod up thats why i say blow drier lol.

Are you doing small portions at a time? Blowing the hot air all over won't do it. Take your time on a spot and heat it up nice. When the seal starts to give put something small in the area to keep the gap open. Work you way trough at a nice pace. It'll take a little bit, but it'll go. I had to clean up the headlights of my old mx3....trust me they were a pia! If you feel a hair dryer isn't working you can step up to a industrial size heat gun...usually Home Depot or Lowes carry them. Baking is a sketchie subject for me....I just think of melted headlights as the end result.

save 50 bucks go to the hardware store and get a heat gun. I used the heat gun on mine and slowly worked my way around the edges. It's not that hard.

....and head lights are about $36 to ship both. You're looking at $100 for something that can be done free at home in 30 minutes!

Did mine using a 30 buck Black n Decker heat gun off amazon. Took some time to get that glue to budge but just be patient. I spent most of the day working on mine (but i painted mine too)

put them in the oven when your mom isn't home! it only takes a a few minutes just throw them on a sheet of foil and cook em, just keep an eye on them and nothing will melt. I did that mod a few times to try the el wire but I didn't like it so i took them out, i also did it to switch my stock black backsplash to a chrome one.

CRAZIECRACKER
02-23-2008, 12:52 PM
I left mine black because i thought it would just be too much chrome on my car and if i painted them my car color i thoght it would wither be too much or too ricey

CornbreadXD
02-23-2008, 01:58 PM
oh no, i didn't paint them chrome I had the KDM headlights but they got cracked so I had to replace the piece with my USA OEM headlights. So i've baked 4 headlights a total of 8 times, never had a fog problem when resealing and never melted anything.

SilverElantra

Actually i painted them fully black and even the lil chrome bulb covers. The stock headlight is more a dark gray.

Save yourself the trouble and put them in the oven. 210ºF for 9 minutes and the butyl around the headlight will become soft. Then, start prying up the clips carefully and separate the 2 pieces of the headlight. Make sure to get a hobby knife or exacto and cut through the butyl as you go.

Once your 2 pieces are apart, look on the back of the clear lens and you will see the piece you want to take off. It is only held by 2 screws. Unscrew, remove the orange lens cover and screw the clear reflector back. After you're done, put your 2 headlight pieces back together (important as you do not want the sealant to fall all over in your headlight) and put them in the oven at the same temperature as before for around 4 to 5 minutes, since the butyl will have hardened up from the first trip in the oven. Once done, you will be able to easily re-clip the 2 pieces together.

Hope that was clear! ;)

Edit: Didn't see the first post with your mom flipping out... wait till she's gone for about 1 1/2 hour and you should have plenty of time to get this done :)

Heat guns can be had for $8 at your local harbor freight tools. And if you keep the receipt you can return it when you're done.

I watched dad hit mom once and she knocked his azz the funk out! I would never do momma wrong. My wife on the other hand, leaves the cooking to me so probably wouldn't think twice about head lights in the oven. As long as they taste good when they're done;)

Ironically, I just did this as well yesterday.

I wasn't difficult. 10 minutes in the oven at 300 degrees. I put them right back together after removing the lens. I also threw the HIDs back in, so I killed 2 birds with one stone.

I did this a long time ago...

I actually have a black mail photo out there with what you can use the orange markers for now.

I used a medium size space heater and that did the trick for me.

Well, hope you got it done.

And the oven works good to. When I owned my 01 LC I put my head lights and tail lights in the oven. I used the space heater was safe this time on the XD2.

Yeah, when I was in my mid teens, I mixed it up with dad once or twice until he realized that I was getting big enough where I was gonna win soon (we've been cool ever since oddly enough), but you don't F with mom. she's a nice woman and all, but ya piss her off, and she'll stomp you!

Does she make you wear the little french maid's uniform too? And seriously, if she can't tell the difference between your cooking, and some well done headlights, maybe you should consider take out? :)

so the silverstar 1156's were amber in color? i was thinking whether to put amber colored turn signals, or change out the rears to white as well....

Dude, that's pretty phat! I've always loved to cook, but mainly for my own pleasure, never got to go to school or anything for it, so a career is not an option. As a side note, do I see the word "Applebees" on your chef's coat? :D and dude, you quoted me in your signature? that's cool as f. I feel, almost, honored!

they came out awesome. great seal and they look so much nicer especially with my grill. thanks again to everyone. i had to put amber bulbs in for the turning signals, i bought the 1156's and they work great but there is some reflection off the chrome on the headlight...might go back to super white i just dont want a ticket for something so stupid

Get the chrome amber like they're talking about above. Will blend right in to the housing and still blink amber. Looks good man!
