Looks like the wife's Accent, aka weeble wobble or turd, has turned into an oil burner at 146k miles. 2 qts in 4k miles. It could be worse I guess. It's definately not leaking, so it has to be burning it. I guess some day I'll have to check it out or put a new engine in it.:hand:

BETA SWAP!!!! BETA SWAP!!!! BETA SWAP!!!! I mean seriously it's a relatively easy swap and almost everything is a straight up swap.

Yeah. . .no. This is THE WIFE'S DAILY DRIVER. No mess. no fuss. No nothing. Period. Those of you married know what I'm talking about.
Car still runs great. I just need to keep an eye on the oil level it looks like. Still quiet as a mouse, even being 2 qts low.
My next issue. . . when it gets really bad do I rebuild it or chance a used one? Since the 1.5 was last used in the 2002 Accent. . . do Iwant to chjance a 4-5 year old junkyard engine?

I'd say do the rebuild before you put an unknown junkyard engine in. Likely you'd get that junker engine, then rebuild it anyway - so save a step in the process. Luckily you have enough cars to get by while one is down for the rebuild, so that wouldn't be much of an issue.

Yeah. . .I'll keep an eye on it for now and see what happens.
Of course, I rebuild the engine at 150k and the trans takes a dump at 160k.

Yeah, isn't that the way it always works?
You could hand her the Elantra and find something different for daddy (when it gets bad)?

Thought had popped into my head. I could get my Swift GT/GTi then and split my time between it and the truck in the winter and it and the bike in the summer. . . .but we had decided to just purchase the Swift as a "racecar" and not make it a DD compromise like the Elantra is now. Besides, I like having a spirited DD.

Is there any sign of blue smoke out the *** end under accel/decel?

Couldn't tell you. I never drive the damn thing, it's the wife's throw-away to beat up to and from work and to get tdinged up at grad school. Ido know it doesn't smoke on startup, since she starts it in the garage and there's no signs of oil smoke when she leaves.

If I remeber right, the valve seals on those engines go bad often. Andy can give you more info on that one.
What weight oil are you using?

I bumped it up to 10W30 to quiet down the upper end noises. Worked like a charm.

Way too thick for the winter IMO.

I'm waiting for Bob to decide to put something really crazy in the car, like an Evo engine so we can see how Faster and Furiouser he really is.

Nope. Not this ugly little duckling. Had we found a Hatch, I might be looking into it more. But the 4dr is ugly, the interior is uncomfortable and ugly and well, I just don't like it. She likes the 35-38mpg she's gotten since we got it and the compact size. But if she had a choice and money no object she'll take the truck everytime. She LOVES trucks.

I tend to stick 10w40 into high mileage vehicles for this reason. I do agree it is much too thick for the winter time. I know you don't like them too much, but maybe start to think about throwing in a Lucas oil treatment and see if it helps at all.

Even 20W50 could be used in summer to keep oil usage down.
Might be worth rebuilding if block doesn't need machining but only light honing.
Almost need to take it apart to figure out how bad it is.

UPDATE:
Well, I drove the little turd this morning. I swear this car feels smoother than my Beta. . . albeit a lot more anemic. But try as I might, I cannot detect ANY smoke, whether it be accelerating, decel, free revving. . . nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Runs quiet, smooth and as strong as an 82hp powerhouse can. Running 74mph indicated (seems my wife has found a "sweet spot") RAN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!
Also, it is due for an oil change. So it's been 5000 miles since the last one. I guess 1qt / 2500 miles is not bad at all.
