Since the Accent, which has been the wife's DD, has turned into an oil burner I've considered giving her the Elantra and Runnin the Accent as my Auto-X car until the engine blows.
Pro's of the Accent:
2200lbs
MAF car's respond to better breathing than the MAP based Elantra
Springs/swaybar are cheaper
2200lbs
Proper tire size for RE-01R's.
Con's:
82hp
ugly as sin
starting all over with a new car
82hp.
I don't know. . . thoughts? I wouldn't have to worry about the wife killing the Accent and beiong stranded as she's have the nicer car. I'd have a new "project" and when the engine took a dump I'd have the opion of a Beta Swap or even a 1.6L swap to stay in Stock Classes.

Well, given that you may have an option of a beta swap later down the road, I'd say go for it. I forget, what year accent is it?

LC if I remember correctly. The motor swap is alittle more indepth with those year Accents. I saw just run it as is and rebuild the motor.

do it make it handle well. If you were to beta swap it for auto x what would your competition be??? Ah **** it Beta swap that biotch. I so badly want to do that swap. I need to sell the Sunfire dammit!

2000 GL Sedan. 1.5L SOHC 5spd. Car itself is solid.
Biggest issue I have is my Konigs/kooks don't fit. So I'd have to sell/trade for a set of dual pattern wheels and buy new Bridgestones to fit.

That seems like it will cost more money to make the Accent an acceptible AutoCross car, than it would to find another car to become the DD.

Is 82 hp at the crank or whp? Curb weight of the XD is ~2635 for the manual.
So the Elantra's ~19 lb/hp at the crank. If it's 82 at the crank, then the Accent is 27 lb/hp. Even if it's 82 whp, dropping the Elantra to, say ~115 whp still makes the Elantra at 23 lb/hp. Less weight/hp for the XD any way you look at it.
Bore the engine out to 1.6 L! no one would know! lol

Springs: $150
Tires: $400
Wheels: hopefully trade with another Hyundai owner.
Intake: $30
Sway bar is the elusive piece. Whiteline's are almost $180 new.

And that is "thrown away" money when the engine eventually goes? Or would you rebuild/swap the engine at extra cost?

Even buying a new rsb that's $760. Not going to find a running car for that price IMO.
REbuild, or swap to the 1.6L AND A NEWER 5-SPD.
My elantra tipped the scales at 2800lbs on the scales at the rock place. No one inside, just the car, half tank of gas. That would be a 600lb difference.

It's still lighter lb/hp than the accent.

and is the Accent what you want for your Auto-X car?

The Elantra isn't. . . does that help?

Yeah, but at least the elantra looks a hell of alot better than the 4dr accent.

and you said your next car for autocross was going to be the "autocross only" car. If you're going to have one of those, do you want it to be the accent?

Well, it doesn't do me any good if it takes a dump on me. It's the "lesser of 2 evils". . . with that said I did find a engine/trans with less than 70k miles. Good price, might just buy it. MY biggest concern with fixing a bad engine is the trans following suit.

Doesn't the Alpha 1.5l have 92HP?

If your going autocross only on the accent, do a junkuyard beta swap, Weight reduction , remove unnecessary stuff, seats , speakers, spare tire,
strip that sucker down to the bone, get some wider rims and tires.

And that puts me in Street Mod, which means I'm competing agains 400hp AWD Evo's and STi's. Nope.
Fact is, what I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALL (did I mention really yet?) REALLY want is a 89-94 Swift GT/GTi as my next racer. The Accent is always going to be 400lbs and 20hp shy of what the Swift is.
We were talking about it last night and really came to no conclusion. I've been driving it for a couple days now, and I cannot find fault in it for what it is. THe car is the perfect "Get me to where I need to go and not cost me muc" car. So I think I'll change the oil, give it back to the wife and say "Here you go. If it dies, call me."

Just looked it up and looks like you're right. . . . notsure where I got the 82. . . I thought I had read they were originally rated at 89hp and then after the "new numbers" came out they were actually 82. . . what ever. 92hp is still weak at best.

Ok, that's what I thought. I wasn't sure if they had adjusted numbers like the Beta.
So there you have it, 92HP, that's about 8-10% more powerful than the 82HP. The car is already faster! Hah.

I guess breaking the 100hp barrier might actually be acheivable. . . although I just found a Swift in Canadiavillelandtuckyton that has the G13B (DOHC, head was shaved, ported, polished and cams installed, running Supra 440cc injectors, full header/catback and using the MegaSquirt standalone. Properly tuned sould put 120 to the front wheels, 140+ at the flywheel. That puts the Accent now 40hp down and 400lbs heavier. . . .

I love how thats the first thing people who dont know auto-x suggest. Yea, like we're going to strip 100lbs out of an elantra and keep up with 400hp evo's. hell, i cant keep up with mk2 GTI's in STS.
how strict are the tech's in your area? could you take a $200 beater metro or something and turn it into a STS class Swift GT? Im sure its a long shot, but could be fun.

I AM the Tech Chief here. . . .but I want to play on a national level. Plus, I don't like to cheat.
I was hanging right there with the GTI's around here. THe Civic's leave me about 3-5 seconds behind. . .D'OH! We'll se what good rubber + more experience + betteralignment with - camber brings this year.

well last time I ran, it was on crappy tires and I hadnt run in quiet a while, first time out in the elantra actually. I got stomped by everyone. lol. I need to get back into it.
Isnt it in the rule book at as long as you use all factory spec parts, you can convert 1 car to a higher model? Still probably not practical i guess.
