I drive a 2001 elantra gls, and I could only get it up to 95 mph at 4000 RPM in 5th gear? Why does my car rpm's not go any higher? Could this car really do 140?

Dude the gov shouldn't kick in till around 110
Even then there seems to be some variance
redline fuel cut is at 6500rpms
mph cut really seems varied as some have reported upwards of 120 i've hit 115 and others have reported 110.

no, its programmed into the ECU... so unless u get a different ECU, reflashed, sports, or w/e... then no, besides... probably isnt too safe to go much faster in an elantra. its there for a reason.
most ive hit, is about 117. down hill. with wind at my back. lol
Do you mean your cars does not go faster than 95 mph? or just that your rpms are not high enough?
I belive that at 95 mph, you could still be in 4th gear.

5th gear is the "cruiser" gear... that's why acceleration is almost non-existent. its the same in all manual cars, the top gear is there to conserve gas once you get up to speed.
if you want to accelerate more, downshift to 4th or (if you are feeling bold) 3rd gear, but just be prepared for the tranny/clutch to not like you after doing that a lot
i have pics of my car hitting 105 and still accelerating, the fuel cut off is 117mph and doesn't turn the fuel back on until ~108 or so

140? in a N/A elantra? holy crap.... was there a car pushing u from behind??? or was something faster infront of you, pulling you? :D jus kiddin. but seriously, hows that possible?

Um ya its not physically possible with the hp available. and u have an auto to top it off

In Germany we have no speed limitations so we can reach topspeed in our cars. And believe me: with my 195 stock tires I reached 220km/h, that's almost 140mph. With the 17"s and 215 tires I only reach 208km/h (130mph).
So if it's not the speed governor it might be the tires (rolling resistance) or some sort of wear in the engine/tranny...

My Elantra Governer hits at 125MPH How did you remove it?

The 01-03 Governer is 110 MPH and the 04-06 is 125 MPH, can you go pass 4K RPM's on any other gear? It could be your Speed sensor that is located on the passenger side knuckle.

Regardless, there is NO WHERE IN THIS COUNTRY where 95mph is LEGAL, let alone a supposed 140mph. On a manual trans, theoretically the carwould hit 140mph at redline. REality says otherwise. Aerodynamics, windresistance, clutch slippage and then the FACT that the car comes with a speed limiter says otherwise.
Little lesson in reality: Going triple digit speeds out in the real world is like walking into a police station at shift change and shouting "I have a gun and I'm going to kill you pig". So many things happen so fast, whether it be other drivers, animals, something that fell off another car, raod debris whatever. You cannot manuever quick enough, or safe enough to be able to control the car.
So please, don't be a stupid ricer that wishes he was PAul Walker and get someone killed because of your immaturity and stupidity. I can tell you this, if it was my wife that was killed by some stupid punk wannabe ricer and he survived. . . it wouldn't be pretty.

I don't go 95 mph anymore, and if I was going to max my car out, it would only be for a couple of seconds. I think at the time I tried this I had old warped tires. Also, I bought my car in 05 with 83K miles. It now has 124K miles. I can go at or above the red line in lower gears. Also, I can't remember if I tried this on my old transmission or my "new" one.
People driving at high speeds get tunnel vision and they miss everything in thier path.
oh yeah, I replaced the fuel filter last fall, and it tried toping out on the old filter which was proably the factory original.

You can't go "above redline". Fuel cut is actually a tick below the visible redline on the tach. Trust me, I've been on it enough to know.

i was going 138 and it was redlining...but we are not supposed to talk about doing that so i was going 65 mph and not any faster....
